Gear Live Giveaway: Sony PSP Value Pack
Each week, Gear Live gives away awesome tech prizes courtesy of PrizeCube. The winner of the last contest was Matt M., who walked away with a brand new Logitech Harmony 676 Remote Control.
I am going to make this quick, and easy. You all want a PSP. You may not want to pay $249 for a Value Pack that may be bundled with things you don’t even want, but you still want one. This is where we come in. We are going to give away two Sony PSP Value Packs in this contest. To enter, all you need to do is tell us which PSP launch game has you the most stoked - without using Ridge Racers as your answer. Just let us know which game it is, and why, in the comments area. In a week, we will randomly pick two people who met the requirements, and their PSP’s will be shipped when the product launches. As a friendly reminder, anyone is allowed to leave a comment, but only U.S. residents are eligible to win the prize. Thanks again to PrizeCube for sponsoring our giveaways.

I would have to say all the Need for Speed games, because I have played all and the graphics is great. I also like speed and driving and this is the best line of racing game ever. But it looks like I will miss one of the need for speed games: need for speed underground rivals for PSP.

What game i would be stoked about is mostly like everyone else, Metal Gear Acid. I know some people are bummed out that it gone to a tactical card game but i think that was a great idea. It caught attention to tactical fans as my self. While other still think it sucks I still think its a gem and glad its a tactical game.

Splinter Cell Essentials keeps the stealthy spirit intact on the PSP, but some costly sacrifices have been made to get it there.
The Good: New and exclusive missions, including some from the yet-to-be-released Splinter Cell: Double Agent; you can save your game anywhere, at any time.
The Bad: Stupendously bad camera control; multiplayer is so pathetic it might as well not exist; long load times; most of the levels are lost in darkness.
Sam Fisher is best known for his exploits on consoles and the PC, but he’s a veteran of the portable game world as well. With Splinter Cell releases on the N-Gage, DS, and mobile phones, it was only a matter of time before the grizzled agent sneaked his way on to the PSP. But despite what its title would have you believe, Splinter Cell Essentials is entirely avoidable.
Splinter Cell Essentials is somewhat of a Sam Fisher’s Greatest Hits compilation, bringing a handful of missions from each of the three released games, as well as several brand-new missions. And, like a greatest hits album, there’s no continuity or context to tie it all together. You just jump from one mission to another, spanning a couple of decades of Sam Fisher’s illustrious career as a shadow-loving badass. There is an attempt to tie the missions together, but it’s a weak effort. Essentials takes place just after the events in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. The game opens with Sam paying a visit to his daughter’s grave on the one-year anniversary of her death. It turns out that Sam ditched the Third Echelon and went missing after his daughter died, and was reported to be associating with known terrorists. This has Homeland Security worried, so they track Sam down, arrest him, and start demanding answers about his past.
Essentials opens with Sam paying a visit to his daughter’s grave on the one-year anniversary of her death. Sam doesn’t have long to grieve, though, because Homeland Security agents arrest him and start demanding answers as to why he deserted Third Echelon and supposedly joined up with terrorists. The game plays out in a series of flashbacks that are set up by someone accusing Sam of some misdeed, such as killing a bunch of civilians. Sam usually replies with something along the lines of, “That’s a lie, this is how it really happened…” And then you play out the mission.
There are nine missions in the story mode, plus three unlockable bonus missions. You start out with a look at one of Sam’s earliest missions back in 1992 in the Colombia jungle, and progress through his career to missions taken right out of the next Splinter Cell game, Double Agent. The missions are all very linear, and mostly involve completing multiple objectives by memorizing enemy movement and occasionally finding the right ledge to hang from or ventilation duct to crawl through. There are light and sound gauges onscreen to tell you how hidden you are, and you’ll come to rely on them almost exclusively at times. Just about all of Sam’s moves and gadgets are intact on the PSP. He can split-jump, hang from pipes, pick locks, hack computers, silently kill or knock out enemies, and shoot guns or throw grenades—usually as a last resort.
Splinter Cell veterans will be able to breeze through most of the levels without any difficulty, despite the fact that the reused levels have been slightly tweaked in terms of enemy placement and pathways. Those who haven’t played a Splinter Cell game before might get frustrated by the trial-and-error nature of the game, because it only takes a couple of shots to put Sam down, and you’ll often be entering new areas completely blind. The game is made easy by absurdly myopic enemies. Sometimes you can walk right in front of an enemy, as long as you’re in a shadow and are moving slowly. Other times, a guard will stand right on top of the unconscious or dead body of a fellow guard without the slightest concern. Further limiting the challenge is the ability to save your game at any time. There’s a price to be paid for convenience, though, as you’ll have to wait close to 30 seconds for the game to reload after you die. Load times abound elsewhere too, and they always seem to last way too long.
The controls on the PSP work fairly well, and as you might expect they’re very similar to the console Splinter Cell games. You move with the analog stick and use the face buttons to perform various actions like crouching, jumping, and interacting with objects. The directional pad is used to manage inventory, pull out weapons, or switch vision modes. When you have a weapon out the camera pulls in to a first-person view where you aim with the analog stick and move with the four face buttons. But After all that I’ve Said I love the Game.

The first portable Syphon Filter is one of a rare breed for the PlayStation Portable—a shooter that offers not only intense stealth and action sequences, but also a control scheme that works.
The original Syphon Filter for the PlayStation made quite a splash with its blend of third-person stealth and shooting action. Unfortunately, subsequent games in the series failed to live up to the promise of the original game, with the most recent version on the PlayStation 2 being especially disappointing. That’s why it came as a pleasant surprise that the newest version of the game, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror for the PSP, turned out as well as it did.
In Dark Mirror, you’ll reprise the role of superspy Gabe Logan as you investigate the mysterious attacks on chemical plants by a terrorist organization. The adventure starts off at a base in the chilly tundra of Alaska, but as the convoluted plot unravels, you’ll discover the usual fare you’d expect from a techno-thriller. There’s secret-weapons development based off genetic-engineering experiments, double-crossing, and even a visit with an old flame of Gabe’s. The story isn’t all that great, but the way in which the game presents it is simply amazing for the PSP.
Throughout the game’s seven-mission campaign, there’s a near-constant stream of speech as Gabe coordinates his operations with his partner, Lian Xing, and handler, Teresa, back at the base. There are also a ton of in-engine cutscenes, complete with lip-synched characters, which help move the plot along and point you toward your next objective. The writing in Dark Mirror does get hackneyed at times, but it’s in a cheesy, Arnold Schwarzenegger-movie way that’s liable to amuse you rather than irritate you—“I’ll see you in hell, Gabe!” “Not if I see you first!” No matter how you feel about the story, you can’t help but feel impressed with the way it’s presented in the game—the production values in Dark Mirror are greater than that of most PS2 or Xbox action games. In other words, this is the kind of thorough treatment you’d expect from something like Grand Theft Auto.
Dark Mirror isn’t all about the movie-like presentation, though. As a superspy, Gabe’s got quite a variety of moves, weapons, and gadgets at his disposal, and you’ll use all of his tricks as you make your way through the game’s campaign. Since the game combines stealth and action, you’ve got a useful radar display that you can use to help you get the jump on enemies. There’s also an array of different vision modes, including low-light night vision, thermal imaging for finding bad guys, and another special, “EDSU” mode that you can use to help you find switches and other interactive objects in the environment. It’s also great for showing you dangers, such as laser trip mines.
The sneaking and shooting is enhanced by Gabe’s ability to stick his back up against the wall and peek discreetly around corners and over low walls. From here, Syphon Filter takes a page from such games as kill.switch by giving you the ability to aim around the corner while under cover and immediately pop out to shoot. Aiming is done with the four face buttons, while moving is done with the analog stick. This gives you the ability to quickly squeeze off a shot or a burst and immediately pop back under cover. Nothing’s quite as satisfying as swinging around a corner and nailing an enemy in the head for an instant, silent kill.
With everything Dark Mirror has to offer, including its great controls, varied campaign, and high-caliber presentation, Syphon Filter is easy to recommend to anyone who likes action games. The stealth in the game isn’t as hardcore as something like Thief or Metal Gear Solid, but it’s also not forced on you either, so fans of both sneaking and shooting can play Dark Mirror however they wish. Our biggest complaints are with the relatively brief campaign and some hiccups in the sound design, but with the available eight-player online multiplayer modes, we can’t complain much about the value. Dark Mirror is easily one of the most surprisingly great games we’ve played in a while, if not an outright early contender for PSP Game of the Year.

Dragonball Z Shin Budokai, because of three things. First the graphics are terrific, you just can’t beleive how good they are. Second the movement, it blew me away how fast the controls reacted when I pressed impressive! Last is attacks, they are strong and powerful, its like if you do two player mode and you mess its over. Overall this game is amazing, I can barely stop playing it you guys should definetly play this game.

OF course it would have to be Pirates of the Caribbean and NHL games because they rock. POTC is good because you can play as JACK SPARROW!!! How great is that… Yeah i need a PSP anyways and broke my 180 $ Synergy so i have no more money…....

Pirates of the Caribbean is a great game and I really want DEAD MAN’S CHEST, and I have The legend of Jack Sparrow for PS2.
You can play as either ELizabeth, Jack, or Will and battle your way through like fifteen different places. You can use light attacks or not so light ones and a special move you get later in the game Jack’s flamecutlass or Will’s hatchetbladething. Jack can throw grog bombs and Will, hatchet bombs
I was suprised because there are these ice people who were vikings and got swallowed in by glaciers and are now evil. You have to go into their cave because they have frozen your boat along with Mr. Gibbs and this is a funny part in the game Jack comes out and says YOUR DEAD, YOUR DEAD, im not dead… then you have to beat all the evils and free a whale under the ice with a horn and tie him to your ship. Well sure enough the whale pulls the boat out but doesnt stop so they fight more vikings to make their way to the end of the ice where they will jump when the time is right.
You can also fight BlackSMoke James and Barbossa along with Bo’sun Pequeno Mallot and some other scary guy. You can also fight the Chaves brothers too. Well, Jack and Will get into alot of trouble but the whole game is basically were Jack is telling his life long story while being hung and having Will correct his every word, its difficult.
It is a good game and I reccomend it to Jack Sparrow lovers and POTC lovers but they dont make it for anyother system along with the Dead mans Chest. Its is made for gameboy, terrible graffics, Nintento DS, ok graffics, PSP, awesome graffics so I am hoping i win this contest because a Synergy broke yesterday and my Hockey stick costs 180 $ so i spent all my money and i was 19 dolllars away from a PSP too!!

i would have to say that teh game that i am totally stoked on is Grand Theft Auto Vice City stories. with this game, you can do whatever you want. it doesnt only have one objective like other games, but it has multiple objective. you can go racing, shooting, run missions, and almost anything you can possibly think of. there are more than just cars. there are also motorcycles, boats, and airplanes. OR, if you dont like to follow the story line of the game, you can just roam around the whole city and find all the things rockstar has hidden for you to find. this games is awesome. i LOVE all of the Grand Theft Auto series.

I can also put music on the psp that would save me the troubly of havin to carry a cd player on me when playing games, and it can play movies that you have to buy also but thats cool.

Great Article, its nice because it brings me back to when i first bought my psp-1000. Its funny what 3 years can do and how much has changed. Now the PSP is in its second revision and running 4.05 as its firmware. Who would have thought the DS would have been such a competitor
