Can Microsoft Create An iPod Killer?
My friend Chris just wrote up a lengthy diatribe about how the iPod just blows away just about every PlaysForSure device, and what Microsoft needs to do to get back into the park to play ball with Apple:
Microsoft *MUST* take control of this situation if they’re ever to come close to competing head-to-head (or hand-to-hand) with the iPod. As it stands, every single Windows Media Device (PlaysForAlmostSure or not) is downright pathetic. Not just pathetic - laughable. Apple controls the process from end-to-end, and that’s why it’s such a fantastic non-sucky experience for most folks. Microsoft, on the other hand, lets the vendors decide what’s best. OH MY GOD!!! Wake up, people!
If you have a much better, cleaner, faster, meaner, more awesome piece of media management software, I’ve yet to see it. The most frustrating part of operating in the world of Windows is having to deal with all these craptastic vendors who think their stuff is awesome. Ever *TRY* to use Creative software before? OH MY GOD!!!
Here’s what you do, Microsoft - you take it all in-house again. And before anybody starts shaking their finger at such a “monopolistic” move, remind them who has the lion’s share of the portable media device market today. You’re *ALL* getting your asses handed to you right now, and the only way to shake things up is to provide fair competition in the marketplace. In this case, I believe it’s imperative that Microsoft set the quality bar for others who develop for Windows platforms.
While I don’t completely agree that all PFS DAPs suck - just take a look at the iRiver H10 - he makes a great point. Microsoft should at least be a contender in this race, shouldn’t they? Is it too late?

I wouldn’t be surprised if they stepped in the ring in the near future. I bet the media features will be in addition to handheld gaming though.

Ever tried buying a song on iTunes that wasn’t a DRM’d s*** quality?? OH MY GOD!!!
Ever tried keeping an iPod intact?? OH MY GOD!!!
Ever tried buying an iPod for a price comparable to the other more durable, more option packed, longer battery life MP3 players?? OH MY GOD!!!
Ever taken a look at the Battery Life? OH MY GOD!!! *Stroke*
I’m getting kind of tired of the Apple Ass Kissing though, Creative makes a superior product, among others, Zen and other MP3 makers products get better by strides with each new generation, the iPod? Baby steps forward.

Microsoft can create a IPod that would kill Apple and everybody else. If they were dicated to it. Creating the ultimate ipod.

I personally feel that my Zen Micro is a better product then the Ipod Mini, and personally even prefer it to the new Ipod Nano.
Creative has actually done a great job in making mp3 players that can compete with the Ipod, but they have no idea how to make something look sexy enough for me to drool and buy it.
I think M$ should just buy creative and give them enough money to make a competitive player. Hell they dont even need to buy them, just invest in them. Get Dell to stop making there ###### ass players and also invest in them.

I posted a comment on the original link to the story about the same issue. BTW, Creative’s software is very bad (almost every user ends up buying Nomad Explorer). Rio had much better software and GUI than Creative did yet it still folded up shop. Creative is losing money hand over fist in the DAP market and it is now only a matter of time till they fold up shop either. BTW, the Dell models are rebranded Creative units anyway and I don’t know what will happen with Creative stops selling DAPs.
So what is going to happen. Either M$ will enter the market soon or it will wait until Creative officially bows out. But no matter what M$ will enter with their own player. The DOJ decision just reinforces what has to be done.

I have an iriver h10 and my friend has an ipod mini i prefer mine way more. Ipod may be more easy to use, but my iriver is just way more explorable and sound quality just out of the box with the normal earbuds is better than ipods. Plus the h10 has more space.
