Apple Reaches 1/2 Billion Mark on iTunes

iTunes 500 MillionWhile every visitor to the Apple homepage will be greeted today by a huge banner proclaiming the company’s monumental sales achievement, only one will be receiving the huge iPod-based prize package for downloading the 500 millionth song from iTunes.  Amy Greer of Lafayette, Indiana pushed Apple over the mark with “Mississippi Girl” by Faith Hill and will be rewarded with 10 iPods, 10000 free songs, and a trip for four to see a Coldplay concert.  While this is an amazing milestone for legal digital music downloads, it’s even more amazing to think that iTunes has sold an average of almost 7 songs to every single living person in the 19 countries it services (feel free to check my math).

what is even more unbeliveable is that Amy just won 10 ipods…what the hell do you need 10 ipods for?

I wonder if I could get a hold of this Amy and get a couple of her downloads…or maybe an iPod.

That’s the samething I was wondering. Why not giver her an iMac or a Powerbook and an iPod and the downloads.

Your math definitely needs checking.  There are just shy of 300 million people in the US alone, so Apple’s sold about 1.67 songs for each person in the US.  I don’t have the time to add up the population for the other ITMS countries up, but clearly the songs-sold-per-person number would be less than 1.6.  Whether it gets below 1 song per person, I dunno…

Wow - you’re 100 percent right - my math was wretched.  I added an extra zero.  So….that’s only about 0.7 songs per person.  Still, the fact remains, 500 million is a lot.

Keep up the digent reading! smile

I love digent reading.  I do it diligently.
