There are now over 100,000 iPad apps available

Apple has what is clearly the top tablet on the market with the iPad, and now it has an another achievement to celebrate. As of Tuesday, there are more than 100,000 iPad-specific apps on sale in the App Store.

The milestone comes a little over a year after Apple unveiled the original iPad. According to MacStories, it took Apple 452 days to surpass the 100,000 iPad app mark to land at 100,161 dedicated iPad apps. At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company announced that it had 90,000 iPad apps, but it appears that number has grown in less than a month's time.

In all, the App Store is said to have 500,000 approved iOS apps in its ranks, a number it passed at the end of last month. However, the number of apps available for download is likely closer to 400,000. According to app blog 148apps, about 20 percent of applications are abandoned by developers, removed from the store because they're not compatible with the latest OS, or given the boot for violating Apple's terms.

Launched in 2008, the App Store has more apps than any other platform's mobile app market. Apple was even awarded a Guinness World Record for being the "Most Popular Application Marketplace." However, Apple has yet to confirm the latest count.

But there's at least one company that is curiously lacking in an iPad app. Facebook, which has the most downloaded iPhone app of all time, has yet to launch an application specifically for Apple's tablet.
