Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes Review

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, a role-playing game released for mobile platforms last fall, initially struck me as a game I could skip without a second thought. It had the appearance of a cheap cash-in meant to capitalize on the launch of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Although I'm not generally not the sort of person to write off a game for being free-to-play (some of my favorite games don't cost a dime to start playing), there's something about the combination of that business model, mobile, and a major franchise that made me assume it was not worth so much as a download.

I was wrong.

Nintendo 3DS XL Black

Nintendo has finally announced that it will be releasing an all black Nintendo 3DS XL. The black version will hit stores on August 11th, which just so happens to be the same day that Mario & Luigi: Dream Team drops as well. If you've been holding out for black because you were too grown-up to rock the blue, red, pink, Pokemon, or Animal Crossing variants, you'll have your wish in about two weeks--and you can pre-order the black Nintendo 3DS XL now.

Nintendo 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro

Nintendo 3DS XL owners have been clamoring for the Circle Pad Pro for the past eight months, and Nintendo is finally set to deliver. The company has listed the Circle Pad Pro device, and it is set to ship tomorrow. The trade off? Look how ugly and uneven it looks. Sure, you get an extra analog controller over on the right-hand side of the device, but we have a hard time understanding why Nintendo couldn't have built-in this functionality right on the 3DS XL itself. Still, unsightly or not, you get a more ergonomic design. You'll be able to pick up a 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro for $20--it's compatible with select titles, including Kid Icarus: Uprising, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, and more.

disney infinity

The chief creative officer of Disney and Pixar, John Lasseter, is unveiling mystery "gaming initiative" Disney Infinity on January 15, 2013 in Hollywood. Also in attendance will be John Pleasants, the principle creative advisor at Disney Imagineering. The attendance of these two suggests the enormity of Disney Infinity, which we currently know nothing about.

The New York Times interviewed Robert Iger, Disney's chief executive, in October, with Iger discussing a similar gaming initiative called Toy Box. It's possible that Toy Box has since transformed into Disney Infinity, which the NYT's described as a "console game with extensive mobile and online applications in which various Pixar and Disney characters will interact with one another for the first time."

We'll keep you posted on more news about Disney Infinity as it develops.

Nintendo 3DS XL

This morning Nintendo unveiled the Nintendo 3DS XL (or 3DS LL in Japan.) The console takes everything about the standard Nintendo 3DS, and makes it bigger. What you end up with is a 4.88-inch 3D display on top, and a 4.18-inch standard touch display on the bottom. Buyer also get a free 4 GB SD card included. In Japan, the 3DS LL will hit stores on July 28th for about 18,900 Yen ($235) while us 3DS XL buyers will have to wait until August 19th to get in on the action, where it'll cost $199.

White PS Vita Assassins Creed III

During the Sony E3 Media Briefing, it was announced that the Playstation Vita would be getting a new coat of paint, along with an exlusive bundle. The "crystal white" model will be Wi-Fi-only, and will ship with Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, along with a 4 GB memory card. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but that's probably because the PS Vita Assassin's Creed III bundle won't launch until October 30th, as that's the release date for the game.

Last week, as some know, Valve released its mobile steam app for the App Store and Android Marketplace in beta mode. Now, it's open and available to all. Go pick up the Steam app today from either store for free if you want to give it a try.

Starfox 64 3D

Nintendo has announced Star Fox 64 3D for the Nintendo 3DS portable. The game will support both analog movement, as well as supporting the Nintendo 3DS accelerometer, allowing you to simply tilt the console to fly throughout the vast levels. The other big feature touted is that you'll be able to see the faces of up to three other friends who you are playing multiplayer with, thanks to the Nintendo 3DS front camera. Each player will have a small box over their vehicle, where you can see exactly who is in control. Star Fox 64 3D will be available in September 2011 in the US.

Nintendo has announced Kid Icarus Uprising, a new Nintendo 3DS title, this morning at its E3 2011 media briefing. They'll also be releasing a set of cards that, when used in conjunction with the 3DS cameras, allow you to do some augmented reality gaming as well. Kid Icarus Uprising will be released later this year.

DS Lite $99

Quick update for you mobile gaming fans - the Nintendo DS Lite is now $99. Nintendo announced the price drop today, ahead of next weeks E3. It's a great price for a fantastic portable console, but we have to wonder--does this mean we might see a Nintendo 3DS price drop next week? It's no secret that the sales on Nintendo's new flagship console have been less than stellar.
