AnthillResearchers from Texas A&M have been utilizing radar to map a leaf-cutting Atta ant colony. They then digitize the images and turned into an interactive visualization system without displacing them. The results are a vertical slice of dirt with tunnels showing as low density, the food fungus, higher, and the earth surrounding the tunnels even higher. By shifting the GPR device, they get 3D.

“Leafcutting ant nests can hold a 3-story house—the rural legend is that tractors can disappear into them,” says team leader Dr. Carol LaFayette.

That makes you wonder just what is down there, doesn’t it?

MobileMe Extension

We know that ‘s service has been off to a rocky start, but we are just glad that the company realizes it as well. Since the launch, people have had trouble with syncing, have lost email, and have discovered that this whole “push” thing wasn’t really as “pushy” as Apple made it out to be when they gave us a look at the product back at .

Originally, Apple gave all subscribers a 30-day extension to compensate for all the issues, as well as a written apology. Since then, things have gotten a little better, but are still in no way seamless. Because of this, Apple has just decided to grant another extension, and this one is twice as long as the original. If you were a MobileMe subscriber as of 12:00 AM PDT on August 19, you get an additional 60 days tacked on to the end of your subscription. Even better, if you were taking a free trial of the service as of that time, you get 60 days added on to your trial. Apparently, Apple doesn’t want you to not sign up due to the kinks they are trying to work out. Good for them.

Hit the Read link below for the full details on the extension, and the eligibility requirements around it.

Lusting after an Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard?  Don’t have the $1600 to drop on such a luxurious - albeit “OMGcooooool” - peripheral, especially when you already have a keyboard that (I’m assuming) works?  We just might have found you a happy medium.  The Luxeed Dynamic Pixel LCD keyboard retails for a comparatively bargain price of $199.99 (tack on an extra $35 if you need a keypad, though that won’t light up).  You won’t get the awesome program-specific key layouts like the Optimus features, but you will get the pretty colors and soft lighting, all of which are programmable with the included software.  ThinkGeek is currently the only place in the States that the Luxeed is available, so get those credit cards ready!
