GM to include Stolen Vehicle Slowdown in Cars
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, GPS, Misc. Tech, Transportation
By 2009, if they are done dealing with the UAW, GM will be equipping its new vehicles with a system that will aid police to remotely stop high-speed chases. In cooperation with OnStar, who can already track devices and help cops find stolen vehicles, it will also issue a signal that remotely slows the car down to idle speed. OnStar is free initially for owners of GM automobiles that have them built in, but must pay for the service beginning with the second year. OnStar says that about 60% continue to subscribe after that first year. In light of the price of new vehicles and fuel, we are not surprised that many decide to opt out and spend the extra on gas.

Busted Tees Say What You Think
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Wearables, Design, Video Games
Anyone who has ever played the first Nintendo system and had it fail mid-game recognizes this sentiment. Started by the creators of College Humor, they sell a wide assortment of original t-shirts and hoodies because, as they say, they want people to “have fun, laugh, look good, feel comfortable, get good jobs, and get sweaty dancing.” Currently all their tees are only $15.99 each (with free shipping if you live in the U.S.) They also encourage others to send in pics with modeling their wares or submit designs for their consideration. If you are overwhelmed by the multitudes on Cafe Press, you might give the site a nod.

BOB Takes Role as Strict Parent
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech, Video Games
If you are tired of yelling at your kids to stop playing video games, Hopscotch Technology’s BOB will take care of the problem. With a simple set-up, it can be used with all electronics, including computers and TVs. BOB will simply turn off whatever device it is connected to at a pre-selected time. It can handle up to 6 users and is tamper-resistant, unless that kid is also a particularly smart one.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends only 1 to 2 hours of screentime per day. We suspect that if parents were to enforce that, there would be a lot of Johnny going over to Jimmy’s house for sleepovers. BOB is available for $99.00 to keep your conscience clear.

The Boombox is due out the end of this month for about $40.00.

Altoids Tin Houses Portable Charger
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Cell Phones, Handhelds, Music, Portable Audio / Video
When we first saw this charger, we thought it was a prototype from Make:, which actually has a kit available for $19.99. It might have started out that way, but now is in fact a viable product that someone has constructed for you. It operates like any other charger with a USB port which is powered by 2 AA batteries (including rechargeable ones.) Use it on your iPod, MP3 player, cell phone, camera, etc. for a charge that they claim is 2x curiously stronger than that of a standard USB charge. The mini boost device is $37.99 at Esty with an optional low-battery indicator for $7.99.

Japan’s Yu Nakajima has become the 2007 Rubik’s Cube World Champ. The sixteen year-old managed to solve the classic 3 x 3-inch puzzle with an average time of 12.46 seconds after five attempts. His speed earned him the top award of $7,000. Over 250 contestants from 33 different countries took part in the event in Hungary, where the game was invented in 1974. Other competitors manipulated the cube with one hand, blindfolded, and with their feet, on 3, 4, and 5-inch sized puzzles. Our only question is, who has enough time to sit around and play with Erno’s invention with his/her feet?

This is No Ordinary Pumpkin
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Household, Internet, Misc. Tech

We came across this site that features some of the most cleverly created pumpkins we have seen. Tom Nardone is more of an artist than a carver and we just thought we would share some of his special veggies. Extreme Pumpkins also features how-to advice, fire, light and pyrotechnics, design strategy, preservation, and what tools to use when carving. Tom’s site holds a yearly Halloween contest for other creative carvers, so feel free to send them a pic of your own jack-o-lantern this year.
(Thanks, Joyce)

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Handhelds
Blackberry devotees, take heart. The Canadian firm Research in Motion claims a net profit of $287.7 million through September 1, as opposed to the same period in 2006, in which they made $140.2 million during the second quarter. The company claims that the jump was due to new global users that helped it beat the 10 million mark, as it added another 1.45 million subscribers. Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Wearables, Misc. Tech, Wireless / WiFi
If you have WiFi, it can often be difficult to find the right spot. But some mighty clever folks have designed a glowing, animated shirt that changes bar strength for the wireless signals. The clothing works for both 802.11b and 802.11g connections and runs on a battery pack concealed in an inside pocket. The decal is attached by hook and loop fasteners so that you can remove it to wash the shirt. It will work for several hours on three AAA batteries (not included.)
