Virtual CultureScientists have taken the concept of agent-based AI one step further and are creating a virtual world inhabited by agents capable of learning, changing, breeding and evolving. The virtual agents will need to learn to survive - make their own food, develop a form of communication, create a life for themselves - all on their own. The sistem will have a series of 1000 agents hosted on a server farm of about 50 computers and rendered for the real world using a modified version of the Counter Strike gaming engine. Hopefully the agents will develop a form of communication - to then be deciphered by human computer scientests and linguists - of their very own. A very interesting read and concept.

BlackJack on iPodIf you’re reading this, you most likely own an iPod.  If not, hasn’t Apple convinced you yet? Have you not seen the TV spots? I digress…iPod Downloads has created a beta application which allows you to play Black Jack on your device.  It’s not impressive yet, but at least you don’t have to play parachute while waiting in a long line.  There are some updates happening this week which allow more games onto your iPod (about 100-150).  Ironically enough, the app is Windows only.

Digital Camera GuideMore and more people are buying digital cameras.  Ask the average person, and they couldn’t tell you exactly why they selected their camera to begin with.  Some people purchase a camera because it’s small, looks pretty, or is from a manufacturer they know is popular. That certainly isn’t the way we should be purchasing high tech equipment.  We should be looking at features and pricing to see if our purchase will be worthwhile.  However, with all the complex specs released by manufactures who the heck understands all of it? How can we determine if we are being ripped off?  This guide written by Walter S. Mossberg should help you determine which one is right for you.

Optimus OLED Keyboard

I must get this keyboard, by any means necessary. Check it out - the keyboard uses OLED to display the keys, and thusly, they are all configurable. As you can see in the image, a few smart keys have been programmed to start specific applications. You can also change the layout display to match that of a first-person shooter for example. Just awesome. Check out more pictures of this marvel after the jump.

SanDisk 512 MB TransFlashSanDisk today announced their support of Transflash - although in a somewhat backwards way. They have announced a new product offering called MicroSD - which happens to be identical to and “backwards compatible” with Transflash. The big news here is that they have doubled the size of the thumbnail sized memory cards. A 512 MB card is expected to retail for less the $70 and be available next month. Perfect timing for the supposed iTunes phone from Apple and Motorola. A 1GB and 2GB version are both in the works and should be available in the next year.

Pencil CarvingsSo I know that Japan is renowned for it’s zen mentality, and ninja hoards, but this is amazing. Some people in Japan have made an art form of carving pencils into various shapes and chains. These are all normal pencils that have been painstakingly carved. I can’t begin to imagine the tools used, or how steady a hand this takes!
