Our latest find in silly things to do online when you should be working is the HairMixer. You simply choose two faces and swap their styles. You can also upload your own image and try on a celeb’s do or search for one on the site. Furthermore, if you are not pleased with the results, the site gives you tips and tricks to adjust the image to look more natural, or at least more amenable. After switching the hair on Bill and Hillary, we found he did not really look all that different, so maybe its true that couples tend to resemble each other after a few decades together.

Gakken Recalls Smart Globes
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Misc. Tech, Toys
Tokyo’s Gakken has recalled 10,000 of their Smart Globes after customers complained about a mislabeling. Taiwan split from communist China in the late 40’s and is still being identified as part of the People’s Republic on the device. It seems that Gakken agreed to the factory based in Shenzhen, China to label the country “Taiwan Island” for its audio pen reader in order to get them manufactured. There have been so many complaints that the globes were recalled with full refund. A similar fate befell Takara Tomy’s Talking Globe, which was also made in China and similarly labeled.

New Zealander Reinvents the Mouse
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Microsoft, PC / Laptop, Peripherals
Although it hasn’t changed much since its inception in 1964, Grant Odgers in New Zealand built what he believes to be a better mouse. He will be meeting with Microsoft and perhaps Logitech to show off his Swiftpoint. While sketchy on details, apparently the device is held between the thumb and index finger, and can be used with or without a flat surface. This sounds to us pretty close to the description of a pen, and in fact MS may be considering if it can replace those now used with its tablets. The Swiftpoint will make its debut March 4 at the CeBit in Hanover, Germany.

It’s lunchtime and everyone is racing to get their Hot Pockets into the break room’s microwave. Do you eat it frozen, give up and head for Taco Bell, or patiently wait? None of the above. You are the proud owner of the Iwavecube, a 10 x 10.5 x 12-inch portable microwave with built-in handle. It won’t handle a Hungry Man dinner, but for $129.95, it may pay for itself if you charge your other co-workers so they won’t have to stand in line either. Find it at the Sky Mall in colors of red or black.

Matsushita Undergoes Name Change
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Corporate News, GPS, HDTV, Household
Matsushita has finally decided to become known by what it mostly was all along, Panasonic. The name change will become final this October 1 if the shareholders agree in June. The Osaka company was founded 90 years ago by Konosuke Matsushita, and even current President Fumio Ohtsubo feels a bit sad but commented, “We must create more than what we are giving up.”
Matsushita/Panasonic will also be dropping its local brand name National for large and small appliances by March 2010 to avoid confusion. Our only comment: It’s about time.

Rolly Challenges Miuro to a Dance-a-Thon
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Misc. Tech, Music, Portable Audio / Video, Videos
It’s a sad state of affairs when a company creates a commercial with a human competing for a top dance spot with a robotic device. Remember Miuro? Sony has devised its own dancing bot to be released in the States sometime this spring. Palm-size, Rolly uses the reflection of the floor to create an acoustical image, with speakers at 180º angles. Considering how identically the two bots operate, it might be a better alternative to pit them against each other.

Tribute to the Little Frogs in the Big CES Pond
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: CES, CES 2008, Editorial, Video Games
It’s been a long week. Imagine being one of the vendors at the CES, overwhelmed by all the electronic sights and sounds, not to mention being in Vegas in the first place. After all the hoopla, it’s time to pack up and move on to Macworld, unless you are like Innex, who features small items like this tiny Mario Kart Style Stylus Pen for Nintendo DS. Do you suppose that companies like this get overlooked in the 150-inch screens and lost in the latest in iTech? Our kudos to the little guys, the tireless sales reps that probably would just rather be home playing Mario Kart.

CES 2008: golla, for Those Who Have
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Cell Phones, CES, CES 2008, Design, Handhelds, PC / Laptop, Portable Audio / Video

We don’t often indulge in designer goods, but this is the CES and we want to be fair. The website alone was so impressive that we just had to mention it. First off, Finland’s golla bags are a “collection, ” not an assortment, that changes bi-annually. They describe themselves as a blend of “lifestyle, fashion, and technology.” We didn’t check, but we are pretty sure Paris must have one of their mobile, musical, digi, laptop bags and sleeves, or backbags. Look at this! It’s a cotton, polyester, spandex sock! Finally, don’t even hunt around the site for a price. Once again, if you have to ask… By the way, ever since someone stole our flipVideo cover, we have been using an old Nike sock to carry it around. Price: $00.00. Usefulness: priceless.
