Justin Bieber Impressed Protege with Writing Skills

Justin Bieber and Carly Rae JepsenJustin Bieber surprised Carly Rae Jepsen with his songwriting abilities.

The "Baby" hitmaker has championed the Canadian singer/songwriter, even appearing in the music video for her song "Call Me Maybe," and while Carly was a fan of Justin's music, she had no idea what a prolific songwriter her is.

"[Justin's" extremely talented -- and, I mean, obviously that's pretty well-known -- but in ways that I didn't realise. I knew that he sang, I knew that he was sort of infectious in his personality, I knew that he danced, but I didn't know how strong of a songwriter he was, and my first introduction to him was actually in his studio and he played me a couple songs he had written, and I was really impressed and I was so glad, because I really, really liked him," she said, speaking in an MTV Twitter chat with fans.

Carrly also admires Taylor Swift and would love to work with her:

Katy Perry Always Honest with Lyrics

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Upcoming Releases, Pop,

Katy PerryKaty Perry always wants her lyrics to be honest, "no matter how much it hurts." The "Firework" hitmaker - who split from husband Russell Brand in December - promises fans she will always tell the truth on her records, and finds going into the studio is often "cathartic."

"People see the lyrics are a bit vulnerable sometimes, but I think that is what everybody wants to hear, they want to hear the truth, no matter how much it hurts. Writing songs is cathartic, it's definitely like I'm pushing something out. Whenever I feel I'm getting toward breaking point, rather than going into a bad place I just get my guitar, or get myself into the studio and free verse, freestyle," she said.

Katy added she always carries a recorder wherever she goes in order to capture all the funny and interesting phrases, words or descriptions that come to her in her everyday life: "I have this little red recorder I have with me at all times, and if I'm walking around the streets it's in my purse and I just pull it out. It's all about catchphrases and people and conversations and what I'm feeling. I love language, especially when you write a pop song, a lot of people think your pop songs are just pop and whatever, but if you listen to the lyrics, each one has a meaning and a purpose, and sometimes has two meanings, two purposes. Basically what I'm trying to say is I'm super deep. But I'm also a pop star."

Madonna Felt Like ‘Caged Animal’

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Upcoming Releases, Pop,

MadonnaMadonna wrote MDNA because she "felt like a caged animal."

The "Give me all Your Luvin" hitmaker was motivated to make her first album in four years because she was upset with fame and felt like she has something important to say.

"I felt like a caged animal. I felt like I had to scream. I had to get some things off my chest. There's something simple and primal and direct about playing guitar and singing. I still have a lot to say. I still get p****d off about things. And I still believe in love," she said.

She also praised producer William Orbit, who worked on MDNA and has previously collaborated with Madonna on her Music and Ray of Light albums: "Something magical happens when I work with William. He is a tortured soul, and he brings out the tortured soul in me."

Madonna also claimed she's not as "in control" of her career as people perceive her to be.

Katy Perry Has Enough Ideas For Two Albums

Katy PerryKaty Perry and has enough ideas to record two new albums.

The "Firework" hitmaker - currently dealing with the heartbreak of the end of her 14 month marriage to Russell Brand in December - is feeling "very inspired" as she plans to go back into the studio.

"I have an idea for the next two records; it just depends. I'm very inspired at the moment, and so I'm gonna follow my heart as I always have and hopefully people will like it."

Katy, 27, added after the phenomenal success of her Teenage Dream album - which spawned five US number one singles - she is not trying to match its commercial success but make the music she feels is most comfortable: "I'm just gonna do what feels right for me artistically. I don't want to give too much away. I also don't want to play the game of trying to continually top myself because eventually it may not always go as I planned. I may not get to be able to have another number one."

Taylor Swift Writing About ‘Earth-Shattering Heartbreak’

Taylor Swift on VogueTaylor Swift's next album will be about her "earth-shattering heartbreak."

The "Love Story" singer has been taking solace in her songwriting after another unlucky episode in love, although, as with her previous confessional songs, she won't name who exactly who they are aimed at. Taylor - who has dated Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, and John Mayer and broke up with actor Jake Gyllenhaal in January last year - told Vogue, "There's just been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak, and that will turn out to be what the next album is about. The only way that I can feel better about myself - pull myself out of that awful pain of losing someone - is writing songs about it to get some sort of clarity."

Taylor, 22, has recently said she's keen to pursue a different musical direction to the country-pop of her first three records on her next album: "I think my goal for the next couple of years would be to make departures in little ways and do things a little differently. And to try to maintain a balance between always providing your fans with what they've always liked from you and continuing to write all my own songs. I'd love to make collaborations in different directions that aren't exactly expected."

Avril Lavigne Starts Writing New Album

Avril Lavigne in June 2011Pop-punk musician Avril Lavigne has already written eight songs for her next album. The "Smile" singer only released her fourth album, Goodbye Lullaby in March, but is keen to follow it up quickly, and has already been working on tracks.

"I already have 8 songs! I would like to release the 5th album really quick (sic). This record was more mellow, and the next one will be pop and more fun again. I already have a song that I know is going to be a single, I just need to re-record it (sic)!" she wrote on fan site Avril Lavigne Band Aids.

The 26-year-old also revealed she will be performing a cover of Coldplay's "Fix You" as part of her set when she tours this summer. Avril also caused controversy at the weekend when she appeared at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada, as she swore during her performance of "What the Hell," which was broadcast live on TV.

Kara DioGuardi, Jewel Tapped for Bravo Songwriting Series

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Gossip,

Kara DioGuardi may not be a part of American Idol any longer, but she is definitely not hurting for a TV job.

It’s just been announced that DioGuardi has been tapped to play head judge on a brand new series for Bravo. The program will focus on an angle of music recently addressed by Elton John: songwriting.

Going Platinum, which will be similar to many of the network’s hit reality shows, will follow 12 musicians as they are tested through a variety of challenges and genres. The winner, as determined by a panel of judges, will receive a number of prizes including deals with Sony and RCA/Jive. They will also receive a $100,000 cash prize.

DioGuardi, who was best known for her songwriting prior to her time on Idol, says she is looking forward to the new gig.

“Hit songs are the backbone of the music industry, and as a publisher, nothing excites me more than finding new songwriting talent,” Kara said in a statement. “I am happy to be a part of a show that helps up and coming songwriters pursue their dreams, while giving the public a look into the creative process.”

The 10-episode series – hosted by singer -- will debut sometime next year.
