Madonna

Clearly the economic woes have not been felt by all.

In 2009, Madonna earned over $280 million in ticket sales worldwide. (That’s enough to pay several divorce settlements.) The success of the Sticky & Sweet tour made the singer the best solo draw of all time. (She beat the previous record set by herself in 2006.) The 50-year-old also became the top concert attraction in North America this year.

Here are the Top Ten North American tours of 2008:

  1. Madonna ($105 million)
  2. Celine Dion ($94 million)
  3. The Eagles ($73.4 million)
  4. Kenny Chesney ($72.2 million)
  5. Bon Jovi ($70.4 million)
  6. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band ($69.3 million)
  7. Neil Diamond ($59.8 million)
  8. Rascal Flatts ($55.8 million)
  9. The Police ($48 million)
  10. Tina Turner ($47.7 million)

Above, you can view the video for ’s “Smash Into You,” one of the tracks on her latest album I Am…Sasha Fierce.

Below, you can hear the song “Smack Into You” as performed by singer/songwriter Jon McLaughlin. He apparently performed the song - more than once - on one of his live tours. Now, the ditty is on a Beyonce album and rumor has it that the track is stolen.

Surely, Sasha Fierce will soon shed some light on all this.

Last night, Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet tour took a slippery turn.

During her Rio de Janeiro stop, the 50-year-old fell on the wet stage while performing her song “She’s Not Me.” But, like any experienced professional, she didn’t let the weather keep her down. She continued singing while still on the floor.

You can see the mishap at approximately the :35 second mark. ( then picks herself up and kisses a “Like a Virgin” model of herself at approximately the 1:00 point.)

ColdplayLeona Lewis

Earlier this year at the 2008 Oscars, American actors walked away empty-handed. Now American musicians are being pushed aside by the British Invasion.

According to the Associated Press, this year’s best sellers were performers from across the pond. Topping the album charts was Coldplay’s Viva la Vida. Although the company does not reveal actual sales numbers, a majority of the band’s digital sales (500,000 since June) were apparently purchased through iTunes. (More than 2 million copies of Viva have been sold overall.) The other artists in the Top 5 include Jack Johnson (Sleep Through the Static), the Juno soundtrack, Lil Wayne (Tha Carter III) and Sara Bareilles (Little Voice).

Although December 2 officially marks ’ 27th birthday, her fans were the ones celebrating this morning. After a free mini-concert in New York City (you can see the video from Good Morning America above), the singer officially announced her plans for a 2009 tour with The Pussycat Dolls.

Beginning March 3, Spears will kick off the 27-city (there’s that number again) North American Circus tour in New Orleans. Tickets don’t officially go on sale until Saturday, but a simple password from the singer’s website can help you get them now.

Cadillac Records SoundtrackThis weeks releases are highlighted by three spotlight albums, the first of which is Circus, which is supposed to be ’ comeback album (same thing they said about last year’s Blackout.) We’ve also got Akon back with his new one, Freedom, which features the track Right Now (Na Na Na) that you’ve been hearing all over the radio over the past couple of weeks. Last, the soundtrack to the latest Beyonce flick, Cadillac Records, is in stores as well. After listening, we think this one is worth checking out, as it has a really good vibe. Here are the links to check out any of the aforementioned albums:

Less than a week before her 27th birthday, Britney Spears gave international audiences a taste of what she has in store for 2009. Unfortunately, copycat ensembles and lip synced numbers aren’t probably what fans had in mind.

Last Thursday in Germany, the pop princess gave her very first “live” performance since the 2007 VMAs. And while her appearance on the 2008 Bambi Awards was far from disastrous - the physically-fit singer seemed a bit more confident - it still could have used slightly more oomph. And originality. Strangely enough, she opted to wear an outfit identical to the one Madonna has been sporting during her Sticky & Sweet tour. Britney also chose to keep her dance moves and live vocals to a minimum.

Britney Spears CircusIt looks like has a marketing team in place that “gets” this whole social media game that all the cool kids are playing these days. Case in point, not only are they not concerned with album leaks, they’ve teamed with IMEEM for an exlusive pre-release landing page that lets you listen to all the tracks on Britney’s upcoming Circus album, which is set for a December 2 release. You can go there, right now, and listen to all 13 tracks in their entirety (and, for some reason, they included Radar again on this album - it was already on her last album, Blackout.)

They’ve also got a bunch of videos related to Britney, including a few music videos, music playlists, video playlists, photos, and more. It’s really well done, and anything that gives me early access to music gets a thumbs up from me. You can pre-order the album in CD form, or as downloadable MP3s, from Amazon.

[Thanks, Alana!]

MIA

In case you haven’t heard, MIA is not retired as she previously announced. Good thing too, I would hate to get my MIA fill by ordering everything in her clothing line. How Many Votes Fix Mix, her latest EP, is worth the $2.49 with just the Boyz track, but now you get an extra bonus with Shells. You don’t even have to pay for this track so you have no excuse - download Shells, listen, loop it 10 times, then tell us what you think in the comments.
