UPDATE: All dates from the North American leg have now officially been postponed until 2011.

‘s trip to Salt Lake City has taken an unexpected detour - toward the hospital.

The singer, who is in the middle of a worldwide tour with U2, is currently receiving medical treatment in Germany. “Bono has today undergone emergency back surgery for an injury sustained during tour preparation training,” a statement on the band’s website explains. “He was admitted to a specialist neuro surgery unit in a Munich hospital, and is under the care of neuro surgeon Prof. Dr. Jorg Tonn and Dr Muller Wohlfahrt. This news comes as the band was set to begin the North American leg of their tour on June 3. That stop in Utah has since been postponed. Those planning to attend the Salt Lake City concert are encouraged “to retain tickets until updated show information can be provided.”

But what about those with tickets in other cities? Well, the fates of those shows aren’t entirely clear right now. “Once [Bono’s] condition has been assessed further, a statement will be made regarding the impact on forthcoming tour dates,” the site states.
