The Avengers really know how to battle it out at the box office.
The comic book movie - helmed by Joss Whedon - took in $200.3 million at the box office this past weekend, securing the top spot for the biggest opening weekend record, just in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($158.4 million), and The Hunger Games ($152.5).
Last week's top movie, Think Like a Man, was bumped down one spot to number 2 with $8 million while The Hunger Games maintained its number 3 spot with $5.7 million.

Apparently it pays to Think Like a Man when it comes to this weekend's box office!
The ensemble comedy - adapted from Steve Harvey's book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man - maintained its top position at the box office with $18 million, earning more than the family-friendly The Pirates! Band of Misfits, which debuted at number 2 with $11.4 million. Last week's number 2 film, The Lucky One, fell to number 3 with a close $11.3 million. The big movie of the month, The Hunger Games, dropped even further down to number 4 with $11.2 million while the Judd Apatow-produced comedy The Five-Year Engagement debuted with $11.1 million at number 5.

Box Office Breakdown: Think Like a Man Overthrows Hunger Games

After spending four weeks at the top spot, The Hunger Games has been dethroned by the Steve Harvey-scribed film Think Like a Man, which took in $33 million.
The new Zac Efron film -- written by The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks -- The Lucky One debuted at number 2 with $22.8 million, pushing The Hunger Games down to number 3 with $14.5 million. The Disney documentary Chimpanzee debuted at number 4 with $10.2 million, and last week's number 2 film The Three Stooges was bumped down three spots to number 5 with $9.2 million.

Box Office Breakdown: Hunger Games Crowned Top Spot Again

There apparently seems to be no stopping The Hunger Games! The futuristic film featuring teens battling to the death beat out both newcomers The Three Stooges and The Cabin in the Woods, taking in $21 million.
The long-awaited Three Stooges took second place with $17 million while the Joss Whedon-produced horror comedy The Cabin in the Woods pulled in $14 million over the weekend. Titanic 3D was bumped down one spot from last week's number 3 with $11.9 million while American Reunion rounds out the top 5 -- down 3 from last week -- with $10.4 million.

Jane Lynch Cast in The Three Stooges Movie

Jane Lynch has joined the cast of The Three Stooges, a big screen story about the famous trio from the Farrelly brothers.
In the film, Lynch will play a nun at an orphanage, where the stooges live as children. The main cast of the film has been the subject of much speculation, with many names attached to certain roles. Early rumors indicated that Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn and Jim Carrey would take on the title roles. Later, Johnny Knoxville and Andy Samberg were rumored to be up for two of the roles.
But it’s Chris Diamantopoulos, Will Sasso and Sean Hayes who will take on the iconic roles as Moe, Curly and Larry (in that order). The Thee Stooges production begins in May.

Three Stooges Movie Ready to Film, Though No Cast Yet

Bobby and Peter Farrelly, ready to direct? Check. A funny script that pays homage to the movie’s theme, The Three Stooges? Check. A shooting location? Check. The only thing the new movie doesn’t have is a cast -- which is something of a problem, since filming is scheduled to begin at the end of April.
Yikes. “We just haven’t made a choice,” explained Peter Farrelly, one-half of the filmmaking brother duo. “But, we will in the coming weeks.” Let’s hope so.
The Three Stooges film is a much-anticipated project that once had some of the biggest of big names attached to it. Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey were going to become Larry, Moe and Curly (in that order), but both Penn and Carrey ditched the project early on.

Johnny Knoxville, Andy Samberg: New Stooges?

The Farrelly Brothers (There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal) are still searching for the perfect Stooges. The comedic filmmakers plan to bring a big-screen version of the slapstick trio to fans ... and, they’ve been planning for a while.
The Three Stooges was originally cast with Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey (Larry, Moe and Curly respectively), but Penn and Carrey both bowed out.
Now, the Brothers are looking toward a Jackass and an SNL vet to help round out the cast. The LA Times reports that Johnny Knoxville may come on board as Moe, while Andy Samberg will take on the role of Larry. “We like both of those guys,” Bobby Farrelly said. “And Knoxville is a real-life stooge.”
Cher will also star in the flick as the leading lady, playing Mother Superior of an orphanage where the stooges create chaos. “Cher is the coolest chick ever,” Peter Farrelly said of the casting choice.
The Three Stooges will be presented as a reboot film with three 27-minute shorts -- if production ever begins.

Three Stooges Loses Sean Penn

Jim Carrey might have been willing to gain 50 pounds to play Curly Howard, but his film has lost an entire body. Sean Penn, who was scheduled to play Larry Fine in the Three Stooges, has just dropped out of the project.
The Farrelly brothers film would have joined the two-time Oscar winner with Carrey and Benicio Del Toro. (The Che star was picked to star as Moe Howard.) Unfortunately, Sean has reportedly decided to put family before work. (His rocky relationship with Robin Wright Penn is currently back on.) That choice means giving up a role in Cartel as well.
It’s not known at this point what Sean’s leave will mean for the long-awaited comedy. Stooges was slated to begin production sometime in August. If the studio opts to wait for his return, the film could be delayed for another year.

Jim Carrey’s Plans for Three Stooges Weight Gain

Whether you’re trying to lose or gain weight, there’s no time like the present to get started.
Even though he hasn’t been officially attached to The Three Stooges project, Jim Carrey has already begun his personal preparations. According to his girlfriend, Jenny McCarthy, that means extra helpings of dessert.
To play the role of Curly Howard, the Yes Man star hopes to pack an extra 50 pounds to his frame. Jenny told Ellen Degeneres on the daytime talk show that audiences will eventually be “blown away” by his overall transformation. That includes his impersonation of the famous character.

Three Stooges May Unite Penn, Carrey and Del Toro

Sean Penn has just lined up his next project, and it has nothing to do with Lindsay Lohan. The 48-year-old actor has just attached himself to a picture from the Farrelly brothers (There’s Something About Mary).
Sean, who recently won his second Oscar for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, will now take on the role of Larry (Fine) in MGM’s The Three Stooges. Jim Carrey, who is still in negotations for the part of Curly (Howard), will reportedly gain up to 40 pounds for the movie. Meanwhile, Benicio Del Toro is being courted to play Moe (Howard).
Unlike Milk, this film will not be considered a biopic. “It takes place in present day, and they look, dress and sound exactly like the Stooges,” Peter Farrelly clarified.
Although it was originally November 2009 release, production is not expected to begin until later this fall.
