Box Office Breakdown: ‘The Purge’ Slays Competition

Though it might not have made as big of a killing at the box office as Iron Man 3 or Star Trek Into Darkness, The Purge made it to the top of its box office weekend with $36.3 million, successfully bumping Fast & Furious 6 off its two-week stint at number one.
The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise garnered $19.7 million, while the magician thriller Now You See Me also fell one spot to number three with $19.5 million. For the return of Wedding Crashers duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, their newest comedy The Internship didn't fair too well, debuting at number four with $18.1 million. Epic stayed put at number five with $12.1 million.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Now You See Me,’ ‘After Earth’ Trail Behind

Neither magic tricks nor an futuristic-yet-abysmal Will Smith vehicle were enough to bring Fast & Furious 6 down from its number one position. The car thriller held its own in its second week at the theaters with $34.5 million while newcomers Now You See Me and After Earth just couldn't make the cut to the top spot.
The Louis Leterrier-helmed Now You See Me placed second with $28 million while M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth debuted with $27 million (even removing Shyamalan's name from promotional material for the film couldn't guarantee a better debut). Epic stayed put at number four in its second week with $16.4 million while Star Trek Into Darkness fell two spots to number five.

More folks preferred thrill to laughs this Memorial Day weekend, pushing Fast & Furious 6 to number one at the box office over The Hangover: Part III.
The car-centric thriller garnered $98.5 million, while the finale to The Hangover series placed second with $42.4 million (both films debuted this weekend). Star Trek Into Darkness fell two spots from number one, having only earned $38 million. The animated family film Epic also hit theaters for the first time this weekend, placing fourth with $34.2 million. Finally, Iron Man 3 placed fifth with $19.4 million, having dropped two places from last week.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Iron Man’ Falls, ‘Star Trek’ Rises to Number One

Though Star Trek Into Darkness didn't hit theaters as impressively as Iron Man 3 did two weeks ago, it still fared well garnering $70.5 million.
Despite holding the top spot for two consecutive weeks, Iron Man 3 came in second with $35.1 million while both The Great Gatsby and Pain and Gain also fell one spot to numbers three and four with $23.4 million and $3.1 million, respectively. The Croods, however, fared well, moving up two spots from number seven to number five with $2.7 million.

‘The Great Gatsby’ Kicks Off Cannes Film Festival

The Great Gatsby opened the Cannes Film Festival last night.
Several stars from the film including Leonardo DiCaprio - who plays main character Jay Gatsby - Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Amitabh Bachchan took to the red carpet in the rain for the premiere of Baz Luhrmann's drama movie to launch the 66th annual film gala.
DiCaprio looked dapper in a smart black suit and admitted taking on the lead role in the motion picture - which is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's popular novel - carried "enormous pressure." He told BBC News, "What is so great about this novel and why people still discuss it nearly 100 years later and still have arguments about the meaning of each sentence and each word and each bit of symbolism, is because it's left up to the interpretation of you as a reader. In a way it's a recipe for disaster because so many people are going to say, 'That's not how I felt Daisy should be or how Gatsby should be.' I just looked at it as an incredible character to take on, something that was subtle in its approach but had so much depth and meaning in every single line."

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Gatsby’ Was No Match for ‘Iron Man’

Despite its buzz, glamour, and the return of Leonardo DiCaprio in a Baz Luhrman production, The Great Gatsby clearly stood no chance against Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man this weekend.
Iron Man 3 took in an impressive $72.4 million, securing its second consecutive week at the top while The Great Gatsby debuted with $51.1 million. Pain and Gain fell to number three with just $5 million and Tyler Perry Presents Peeples earned $4.8 million in its first week, marking it as number four in the box office chart. The baseball drama 42 fell two spots with its $4.6 million take, rounding out the top five.

Prince and Lady Gaga are writing songs for The Great Gatsby soundtrack.
The "Purple Rain" hitmaker and the "Poker Face" star reportedly approached director Baz Luhrmann about working on the musical accompaniments to his forthcoming film - which stars Leonardo DiCaprio Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Isla Fisher - cast member Adelaide Clemens has claimed.
"They have some new music that's going to be added to the film... Some pretty huge artists have approached Baz and are writing songs for the film, and I don't think Warner Bros. are going to turn down Prince and Lady Gaga knocking down your door," Adelaide said.
However, Adelaide refused to explain any further, so it is unclear whether the pair will submit songs separately or together: "I don't know if I'm allowed to say that."

The Great Gatsby … in 3D?

Now it’s just getting ridiculous.
The oft-adapted F. Scott Fitzgerald book The Great Gatsby is coming back to the big screen . . . and Leonardo DiCaprio is going to be in 3D.
The new film, which co-stars Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan (she reportedly beat out Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley for the role of Daisy Buchanan), is one of many in a long line of adaptations.
The Great Gatsby was formerly a movie in 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000 and 2002 (if you want to count the loosely-adapted G). Set in the early 1920s, the story revolves around recent Yale graduate Nick Carraway (Maguire), who becomes the next-door-neighbor to the very wealthy Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio).
And, it’s going to be in 3D. The 3D treatment is fine for your effects-driven action films and kid-friendly comedies, but a dramatic period piece based on famous literature? We’re trying hard to reserve judgment -- after all, Leo DiCaprio is in the lead.

Baz Luhrmann to Shoot Great Gatsby in 3-D?

Baz Luhrmann is thinking about shooting The Great Gatsby in 3-D.
The Australian director - who is known for theatrical films such as Moulin Rouge - said he has "workshopped" the idea to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel to life in multiple dimensions.
He revealed the possible plan while speaking in Las Vegas about technology in film at the Consumer Electronics Show alongside fellow directors Michael Mann and Oliver Stone. Baz's version of the The Great Gatsby is set to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. At the show he admitted he wasn't surprised that there some scepticism about the widespread adoption of 3-D, as it was first used with "gags" before moving on to "spectacle and drama" in Avatar - but said he thinks it can be used in "poetic cinema" - films similar to his adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.
