What comes up, must eventually come down.  That goes for ‘s sports career as well.

Even though netted this weekend’s #1 spot, the basketball flick earned a measly $15 million.  That gross trails far behind 2006’s Talledega Nights ($47 million) and 2007’s ($33 million).  Sadly, Semi‘s debut also takes a backseat to Kicking and Screaming and Bewitched.  (In Ferrell’s defense, this movie was the only one of his sports films to be rated R.)

Box Office Breakdown: 30 Days of Night Sucks Up the Competition

I never thought I would ever find myself writing this:  ‘A Josh Hartnett-led film has opened at #1.’  Of course, he did have a little help from a vampire or two..

The horror film, , had an impressive debut for what was actually an unimpressive weekend.  With only $16 million, the Alaskan-set vampire flick beat out a host of movies filled with Oscar-nominated stars.  Ben Affleck’s well-reviewed directorial debut, , opened up in 6th place.  , starring are-they-or-aren’t-they-dating Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, barely cracked the Top Ten.  Meanwhile, placed a dismal 15th despite the presence of Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro (and promotion on Oprah).

The success of 30 Days and the surprise return of - which placed 8th even though it was only in 564 theaters - clearly spells out the audience’s need for some Halloween fare.  This bodes well for the release of which opens next weekend.  (Yay!)

Reese Witherspoon Gives the Dish on Divorce from Ryan Phillippe

Reese Witherspoon will appear on the cover of Elle this month, but it’s the inside story that’s getting all the attention. In her interview, Witherspoon talks candidly about her divorce from fellow actor . The actress said there were times when she was crippled by emotional pain, and she had to keep telling herself “it’s okay” just to go about her normal life. Witherspoon went on to say that her role as June Carter Cash helped her come to terms with the divorce – the Oscar she walked away with ain’t bad, either. Reese Witherspoon is at least one actress who doesn’t crave media attention, saying “if you’re wearing your panties – gosh darn it, leave me alone!” Like any good southern girl, Reese at least knows how to properly exit and enter vehicles – and certainly wouldn’t be so trashy as to go sans underwear.

Bunny Lake Not the Only One Missing

Reese Witherspoon A big-budget remake of the 1965 Otto Preminger hit Bunny Lake is Missing has been in the works for three years, an adaptation of a famed novel. Spyglass, fundraiser of the flick, got Joe Carnahan on board to direct, while the film’s star Reese Witherspoon was announced as one of the producers, alongside Jennifer Simpson and Mark Gordon. Reese would play the lead in the film, Ann Lake, mother of missing Bunny Lake. The story is a chilling one (that should be familiar to movie buffs): a young mother arrives at school to pick up her daughter, Bunny, only to be told the child never existed. At least this part of the plot is startlingly familiar to the Jodie Foster flick Flightplan (2005), but who’s keeping track of all the remakes, really? Five weeks before production is scheduled to begin, Bunny Lake isn’t the only one missing. Now, the flick is sans one movie star/producer.

For reasons as yet unknown, Reese Witherspoon has surprisingly bailed on the project, leaving Spyglass in a frantic scuffle to find a new leading lady. With the production clock ticking, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to replace their A-list star in time, and the time table will probably be pushed back on the Bunny Lake project. For now, fans can rent the recently released to DVD version from 1965, starring Laurence Olivier as Supt. Newhouse and Carol Lynley as Ann Lake.
