Box Office Breakdown: Another Win for Final Destination

Ticket buyers ended their summer vacations by booking The Final Destination. For the 2nd time in a row, the horror entry topped all entries with a 1st place finish. Thanks to the $15.3 million added to the pot, Warner Bros. saw its sequel rise above the $50 million mark during the Labor Day weekend
Inglourious Basterds pulled in another $15 million and narrowly missed another win of its own. The WWII movie has now raked in over $95 million domestically and given Quentin Tarantino the 2nd best gross of his career. (Pulp Fiction is still the champ.)
Meanwhile, Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper joined forces for a 3rd place debut. All About Steve may not have done Proposal or Hangover-esque numbers, but the comedy did walk away with something to brag about. The Fox feature totaled the largest per screen average of any movie in the Top 10.

Mila Kunis’ Hellish Humor

Mila Kunis fears her dark sense of humor will see her condemned to eternal damnation when she dies.
“I’m going to hell so fast. Like, on an escalator. It’s going to be a straight shot. There is not even going to be a stop in limbo,” the Extract actress said.
Mila, who voices Meg Griffin on the sitcom Family Guy, says she can’t get enough of the show’s sardonic storylines.
“It takes a lot to offend me. I mean, I’m sensitive to certain things. I haven’t figured them out yet. But I’m sure they are there,” the 26-year-old brunette beauty told Details magazine. “There was a Family Guy skit three or four years back, for instance. It was a whole musical number about prom night Dumpster babies. The skit is all about young girls on prom night giving birth to babies and throwing them in the trash. I said, ‘This is f***ed up!’ You have to see it!”
Although Mila fails to find the animation’s risque plots upsetting, she admits she does get tired of being asked about her former That ‘70s Show co-star Ashton Kutcher. “A woman asked me, ‘So! Was Ashton a prankster on set?’ I went, ‘Oh my god, for real?’ That’s when I know an interview is going sour - when they ask me what it was like kissing Ashton,” she explained. “The show has been off air for four years. It’s just no longer cute or funny.”

First Look: Affleck and Bateman in Extract Trailer

Yes, Ben Affleck may now be a father of two—but that’s not the reason for his disheveled appearance. Later this fall, the the actor will reunite on the big screen with his State of Play costar, Jason Bateman, for a film from Mike Judge (Office Space).
In Extract, Bateman plays a factory owner who experiences a series of problems personally and professionally. Affleck stars as his best bud.
The comedy - also featuring Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig and J.K. Simmons (Juno) - premieres on September 4.

This past weekend, moviegoers showed very little interest in Halloween-themed fare. Despite several horror options, ticket buyers put a G-rated film on top once again.
Although Friday night was slow for cineplexes everywhere, theater attendance thankfully picked up by Saturday. And while there was tight battle for 2nd place, High School Musical 3 had an easy fight for #1. One week after its $42 million debut, the Disney feature added another $15.3 million to the bundle.
Coming in second was a movie on the opposite end of the wholesome spectrum. Zack and Miri Make a Porno - a movie that narrowly escaped an NC-17 rating - pulled in just over $10 million during the past three days. That turnout placed the raunchy comedy amongst Kevin Smith’s highest debuters. (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back earned $11.1 million in 2001 while 2006’s Clerks II raked in $10.1 million.)

This past week, the multiplexes had a little bit of something for everyone: politics, animals, music, dancing, thrillers, Oscar contenders and even horror. Not surprisingly, this meant a lot of dollars were shelled out in return.
As expected, the big screen debut of High School Musical 3 had tweeners (and their loving parents) all atwitter. Thanks to a $42 million debut, the G-rated film officially became the best musical opener of all time. (Mamma Mia! - with its $27.8 million - was the previous leader.)
Meanwhile, a film on the other end of the ratings spectrum was scaring up some decent dollars of its own. Saw V, which probably could have waited to premiere on Halloween, took in approximately $30 million over the last three days. Although it was pitted against the highly-anticipated Disney sequel, the movie carved out its own audience and raised first place-worthy numbers. Although the series is currently on its fifth life, the 2008 installment came within $4 million dollars of Saw III, the franchise’s best performer to date.

Box Office Breakdown: Max Payne Outvotes W for #1

Even though Josh Brolin was the host of last Saturday’s SNL, it was Mark Wahlberg - a minor player on that same show - who ended up on top.
This past weekend, Max Payne finally managed to do what no other movie has done yet: take Beverly Hills Chihuahua down. The video game adaptation earned $17.6 million putting nearly $6 million between itself and the family flick.
Surprisingly, a whole Oprah show dedicated to The Secret Life of Bees couldn’t provide that star-studded cast enough buzz. Despite a $10.5 million take, the drama still placed behind the four-legged film. (Bee did, though, earn more per theater than any Top Ten entry.) Meanwhile, Oliver Stone’s latest project did a respectable job for a politically-themed movie. W. also raked in $10.5 million this weekend, narrowly missing third place.

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:
It seems as if there isn’t a woman James McAvoy can’t romance. In the past few years, he’s been paired with Gillian Anderson, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathway and, of course, Angelina Jolie. Now the rising actor will be taking on his biggest chemistry challenge yet.
In Gnomeo and Juliet, McAvoy and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) will voice characters in a CGI-animated version of the Shakespeare drama. But those looking for any Montagues or Capulets will be pleasantly surprised. In this version, the lovers will actually come from rivaling families of garden gnomes.
This film, co-produced by Elton John, will also feature music from the Lion King musician. The feature should be completed by 2010.
