Box Office Breakdown: Wonderful Start for Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

Something tells me we’ll be seeing more collaborations between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton soon.

, the latest project from the famous movie-making team, unfolded to a whopping $116 million over the Oscar weekend. Disney’s 3-D adaptation had the best open ever for a non-sequel and the largest debut for any winter release outside of the holiday season. (And we thought Passion of the Christ‘s $83.8 million looked good six years ago.)

Tim Burton’s entry gave the director his best first weekend to date (compared to the $68.5 million Planet of the Apes grossed in 2001). The movie did, though, come in second to Johnny Depp’s personal high. (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men’s Chest raked in $135.6 million in 2006.)

Alice also topped all 3-D openers…including Avatar. (Granted, James Cameron did have a blizzard to contend with at the time.)

Depp also suggests the Mad Hatter will have a great affection for the movie’s protagonist, Alice, played by actress : “They complete one another like a brother and sister do. He’s very protective of her, and she’s very protective of him.”

Earlier this month , who plays the White Queen in the movie, admitted the original script had her playing the lead role of Alice - but she turned it down as she felt it was too close to a previous role.

“The studio had the Alice script a long time ago and I was approached back then for the part of Alice. I considered it, but felt, what with The Princess Diaries, that I had been there, done that sort of pretty-girl-in-a-fairy-dress role. I told the studio, however, that I would, however, be interested in playing the White Queen.”

follows a storyline different to the original story, written by Lewis Caroll, and will be released in early March.

Getting Into Character: Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter?

Johnny Depp

Given all the characters we’ve seen take on, is the Mad Hatter really a stretch?

Although the circumstances behind this image have not yet been confirmed, it’s believed this picture is of the 45-year-old on the set. Since the Tim Burton film will be incorporating live action and performance-capture technology a la Beowulf, it’s not clear how this costume may fit into the Lewis Carroll update.

The 2010 release also features Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Helena Bonham Carter (the Red Queen), (the White Queen), Michael Sheen (the Cheshire Cat) and Crispin Glover (the Knave of Hearts).
