Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis and Tyler Perry contributed to one of the largest November weekends in box office history.
Megamind – starring Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt – topped the competition this weekend with a $46 million take. The animated comedy opened bigger than How to Train Your Dragon – another Paramount/Dreamworks collaboration – did in March ($43.7 million), but smaller than Despicable Me ($56.4 million) did in July.
Todd Phillips’ Due Date, featuring Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr., also had an impressive open despite landing into second place. The movie, which grossed $32.7 million, had the largest premiere for any R-rated flick in November. (The movie bested the record set by Borat’s $26.4 million in 2006.) The film, though, fell behind The Hangover’s $45 million open in 2009.

Box Office Breakdown: Saw Franchise Ends with a Win

The Saw franchise, which has been churning out annual entries since kicking off in 2004, introduced a new twist to the latest October entry. That visual element, plus a calendar shift, helped Saw 3D take first place over the holiday weekend.
Despite the $22.5 million debut, Saw 3D – the seventh and final film in the series – didn’t exactly end the series with a bloody bang. The horror flick had the fifth-best open in the entire franchise -- and that's including the higher ticket prices. (Only the 2004 original and 2009’s Saw VI – which was pitted directly against Paranormal Activity – did worse.)

Box Office Breakdown: Paranormal Activity Takes Over Theaters

Combine a mysterious baby and a barking dog with a $3 million budget – and what do you get? Horror’s biggest opener to date.
Paranormal Activity 2, Paramount’s follow to last year’s surprise hit, scared up a record-breaking $40.7 million over the pre-Halloween weekend. The film not only took first place away from Jackass 3D, it edged past Friday the 13th for the scream title. (That 2009 remake debuted to $40.6 million in February 2009.)
Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, which expanded from a limited release, also made entry into the Top 10. The Matt Damon-starrer settled into fourth place with a $12 million take.

Jeff Bridges + Matt Damon + Josh Brolin + Joel and Ethan Coen = a Christmas release packaged perfectly for awards season.
In this remake of True Grit, Bridges plays Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn, a marshal recruited by a 14-year-old girl (newcomer Hailee Steinfeld) to help find the man (Brolin) who killed her father. Matt Damon stars as a Texas Ranger also on the hunt for the suspect.
The Coen brothers project, a remake of the 1969 John Wayne classic, will open on December 25—just over a week after Bridges’ TRON: Legacy hits theaters.

Matt Damon Gets Tender With Keira Knightley
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: 20th Century Fox, Adaptation, Classics, Drama, Period, Romance, Casting, Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Rumors, Upcoming Releases,
Matt Damon is set to star in a new period drama alongside Keira Knightley.
The Invictus star - who already has three movies in the pipeline this year - has reportedly been offered a role in the movie adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic Tender Is the Night, even though no director has been chosen yet by 20th Century Fox.
The 39-year-old actor would play a talented young doctor called Dick Diver who lives on the French Riviera in the 1920s with his wife Nicole. The movie, which so far has only a script written by David Nicchols, tells the tale of Dick as he goes through life, weighing up different issues in his mind such as his wife’s wealth.
The female lead has been offered to British actress Keira, who is said to be keen to star with the American star. Matt recently admitted he has such a busy schedule this year he doesn’t plan on taking any time off:
“I want to direct someday and I can’t really pass up the chance to work with the people I’m getting to work with. I’ve worked with Paul Greengrass three times now, and Clint Eastwood twice, and Steven Soderbergh five or six times, and the Cohen Brothers this month. As long as that keeps happening, I can’t see myself taking time off, unless the work dried up.”
Tender Is the Night does not yet have a release date.
Box Office Breakdown: How to Train Your Dragon Soars to #1

Jay Baruchel may be dating a girl out of his league, but he’s now got a dragon under his command.
Friday’s premiere of How to Train a Dragon had both Baruchel and Gerard Butler pulling double-duty over the weekend. The animated feature easily surpassed both Out of My League, Bounty Hunter and - most importantly - the reigning champ (Alice in Wonderland) to take the win with a $43.7 million take.
Unfortunately, even higher ticket prices couldn’t lift the 3-D feature past a previous Dreamworks entry. Last March, Monsters vs. Aliens towered over the competition with a $59.3 million bow.
Meanwhile, Hot Tub Time Machine - the weekend’s only other new wide release - warmed up to a $14 million debut and a third-place finish.
