Oscar-Winning Once to Become a Musical

Those of you who felt all warm inside when Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard won their Oscars might just feel giddy about this news. Once - the small film Marketa and Glen received their Academy Award for - is now being turned into a Broadway musical.
John N. Hart Jr., Jeffrey Sine and Frederick Zollo,, the producers who smartly optioned the film before this year’s awards ceremony, are aiming to bring the Once to the stage by 2010. It’s their hope that Hansard and Irglova - along with the movie’s director (John Carney) - will have also background roles in the production.
The stage version, which will most likely play in theaters with about 1,000 seats, is expected to feature songs from the movie including Oscar-winner “Falling Slowly.” Other songs that didn’t make the theatrical cut may be included as well.

‘Shrek’ Comes to the Stage

Watch out Oprah, someone else is ready to take on the world.
Despite three big screen installments, a television holiday special and two more sequels to come - Dreamworks just hasn’t had enough. Hoping to milk its green cash cow for all its worth, the film company will be branching out with its ogre. Late this summer, Shrek the Musical will make its debut.
The stage production, eventually bound for Broadway, will first make its run in Seattle before coming to the Big Apple. This will not be the first musical to premiere in the Emerald City. Tony-award winning Hairspray previewed in WA back in 2002; Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein did the same in August ‘07.
The show at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater is scheduled to run Aug.14-Sept. 21.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton: Together Again

Over the years, many actors have come and gone. Few have had the staying power of Johnny Depp, who continues to get high-profile roles and enjoys his pick of scripts. The raven-haired thespian has showcased his acting talents over the years with an array of somewhat odd roles, preferring darker-toned movies rather than lighthearted comedy. A long-standing director-actor relationship and Depp’s penchant for the unordinary makes him perfect for Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, an adaptation based on the successful Broadway play.
The movie, set in London more than one hundred years ago, features Depp as none other than Todd, a deranged barber bent on murderous revenge. DreamWorks and Warner Bros. both lent studios to create this tale of cannibalism, revenge, death, and darkness. By the way, it’s a musical.
Sweeney Todd hits theaters December 21.

Clooney Back in Director’s Chair

George Clooney may take another turn in the director’s chair, this time with a Warner Bros. flick. Honestly, I cast a dubious eye upon Clooney’s directorial skills – until I saw Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Now, I have a feeling the politically-themed Farragut North could become a surprise hit, especially if the rumors prove true and Leonardo DiCaprio winds up in the film. Negotiations are under way, which bodes well. The film is an adaptation of the upcoming Broadway play, which itself is loosely based on the 2004 presidential campaign of Howard Dean. Clooney and DiCaprio, if negotiations go well, could also serve as producers on the movie. The play will open in 2008, just before the presidential election.
