Box Office Breakdown: Wall-E and Wanted Both Winners

Wall-E

Although we haven’t yet reached the 4th of July weekend, theatergoers apparently had plenty of time and money to spend over the past three days. And while a cute robot had the honor of placing first, also came out a winner herself.

When the final numbers were tallied, Wall-E and each wound up grossing over $50 million since Friday. The Disney/Pixar film edged out the action flick by nearly $13 million dollars, but the comic book adaptation had the best per screen average for any entry in the Top Ten ($16,040). Meanwhile, both films forced a few rewrites in the history books.

  • had the third largest debut for a Pixar film. It’s total fell behind The Incredibles ($70.5 million) and Finding Nemo ($70.2 million).
  • The animated comedy also had the best Friday open for any Pixar release.
  • The James McAvoy feature topped all R-rated premieres during the month of June.
  • Wanted also gave Jolie her largest first weekend ever.

Box Office Breakdown: Steve Carell Outsmarts Mike Myers

The Love Guru

What was being billed as a huge comedy showdown turned out to be a pathetic fight. The debut of easily outperformed Mike Myers’ live-action return to nab the #1 spot this past weekend.

Smart, starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson, picked up $38.6 million over the past three days - nearly $20 million more than . The big-screen adaptation of the ‘60s television series also averaged $9891 per screen, over twice as much as Guru ($4617) did.

Jessica Alba Not Aiming to Be Taken Seriously

Jessica AlbaIn a recent interview with Allure magazine, told us why we’ll never ever take her seriously.  The pregnant actress apparently doesn’t care whether we like her work; she’s just interested in our theater dollars.

When asked why she doesn’t delve much into smaller independent fare, the 27-year-old responded:  “To me, box office is the most important thing. If the movie makes money, then I’m fine.”

She then went on to explain her affinity for money.  “I grew up not having a lot. I’m really happy to be making money, not depending on a man, and not having to suffer to survive in this business. Struggling is not fun. Been there, done that.”

In Theaters This Weekend (4/4)

Leatherheads

Here are some possible suggestions for your upcoming weekend:

Will There Be Another Fantastic Four?

Fantastic FourIt’s been almost a year since the last movie hit the big screen…should we be expecting another one to come sometime soon?  Well, according to Chris Pine

Evans—probably not.

The actor who fired up the first two installments as the Human Torch is apparently not banking on a third episode.  At a time when sequels are greenlighted at the mere flash of a dollar bill (e.g. Cloverfield), 20th Century Fox has given its core four no hint of any possible future plans. Evans

Pine

recently told MTV, “We had all planned on doing [another] one but if there were going to be a third I think a week after the second one was released we would have heard.”

Well at this point, even if Fox was interested in churning out another FF film, the studio would probably have to wait some time before they could even begin production.  I don’t anticipate the pregnant will be ready to don that skin-tight costume again for quite a while.

Justin Timberlake Wears Little for The Love Guru

Justin Timberlake, The Love GuruJustin Timberlake, The Love Guru

Tired of seeing repeat the same schtick over and over again? Well, if you’re a fan, you may have a whole new reason to watch The Love Guru.

The film, which opens June 20th, features Myers as an American raised in India.  He is invited to the States when his self-help advice is sought.  Timberlake, who wears very little based on the preview pics, plays an athlete who has an affair with a hockey player’s wife.  As for - I believe she stars as the vacuous beauty.

Surprising fun fact?  Not including his roles in the animated Shrek films, this is Myers’ first live-action role since 2003’s A Cat in the Hat.  It only felt like he was everywhere.

You can view the Guru‘s trailer, after the jump.

Memorable Moments from the Unmemorable Academy Awards

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Awards, Celeb News,

Jon Stewart, Academy Awards

Last night’s Best Actor categories were as predictable as the Best Actress races were surprising.  Yesterday’s ceremony was also as disappointing as it was routine.

For months now, we’d been hearing about several plans being orchestrated for the .  If the writers’ strike was still in effect, the producers swore the telecast would continue with packages that celebrated Oscar’s 80-year history.  Interestingly enough, even with the scribes back at work, the show was still horribly written and crammed with unnecessary fillers.  (Even I could have penned ‘the always Fantastic…Jessica Alba’.)

As it was, the winners appeared to have been given less time last night to accept their awards than ever.  (Which may or may not have been a good thing.)  But did really need to rush his lovely speech to his mother?  Did the organizers have to reshow the previous awards presentations?  Did the AMPAS President really need to waste time explaining how the selection process is done??
