Denzel Washington Never Goes to the Movies

Denzel Washington never goes to the cinema because the paparazzi ruin the experience for him.
The 58-year-old actor may have a distinguished acting career, but he admits he's not really a fan of taking a trip to the movies himself because he hates being bombarded by photographers afterwards: "I don't go to the movies; well, you know, it becomes a drag. You've got to go to certain theatres. I went to Century City [in Los Angeles, California] once and by the time I came out, they were waiting, the paparazzi, so it kind of messes up your experiences."
The Flight star claims the last film he can remember watching at the cinema was The Hurt Locker - which was released in 2008 - but he is adamant he must have been to see a flick on the big screen at least once in the last five years to watch a movie. "I'm embarrassed to say I'm not much of a film-goer ... I haven't been to the movies in a while. I'm trying to think of the last movie I saw in the theater. It wasn't The Hurt Locker, it had to have been one since then!" he explained.

Lincoln leads the Oscar nominations after being named in 12 categories.
Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane unveiled the shortlist for this year's Academy Awards earlier today, and the Steven Spielberg-directed biopic - which stars Daniel Day-Lewis as pioneering President Abraham Lincoln - leads the way, followed closely by Life of Pi, which is up for 11 honors.
Both movies are up for the prestigious Best Picture Oscar, but will face competition from Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Silver Livings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty to take home the statuette.
Lincoln stars Daniel, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones are all up for awards, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively, while Spielberg is in the running for Best Director.

Who needs method acting when you have YouTube?
Denzel Washington and Aaron Paul both recently admitted to learning how to play alcoholics for their latest films - Flight and Smashed, respectively - from watching drunks on YouTube.
"You can YouTube 'drunks.' There are thousands. They are amazing," Washington, 57, said. His favorite video is of "this one guy that's trying to open a door and it takes about a half hour."
Paul also heralded the video site for its collection of inebriated individuals' humorous actions caught on tape: "I watched so many funny videos. There are so many. Just type in 'drunk people' or 'people drunk,' and you'll find some gems. There are amazing videos on YouTube that only have like 400 views. I'm just shocked that the entire planet hasn't seen them yet."

Adam McKay to Direct Uptown Saturday Night Remake?

Adam McKay is in talks to direct the remake of comedy Uptown Saturday Night.
The Anchorman director is expected to start work on the project after completing the sequel to the Will Ferrell comedy, which is set for an early 2013 start and 2014 release. Will Smith and Denzel Washington are in line to star in the film with the Men in Black star and James Lassiter's Overbrook Entertainment developing the movie, Deadline reports.
The 1974 motion picture - which starred Bill Cosby, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Flip Wilson - sees friends Steve Jackson (Sidney) and Wardell Franklin (Bill) partying at a illegal nightclub when they are forced to hand over their wallets to masked bandits. But the day after Steve learns that his wallet contained a winning lottery ticket, so the pair enlist the help of underworld crime bosses and fake detectives as they set out to get his winnings back.
Timothy Dowling - who wrote the script for This Means War - is in line to pen the movie and he has previously described the film as having a "similar tone" to 2009 comedy The Hangover.

Box Office Breakdown: Dawn Treader Sails Past Depp, Jolie

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader sailed to a first place finish this weekend despite a lackluster start. The latest C.S. Lewis adaptation – which was produced for an estimated $145 million – earned only $24 million in domestic sales. That figure is $31 million less than Prince Caspian’s debut and approximately $41 million below The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’s premiere.
Landing into second place was The Tourist, which rang in a disappointing $16.5 million. Although the film boasted two big A-list stars (Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie), the thriller turned in Depp’s smallest open for a wide release since 1999’s The Astronaut’s Wife.

Box Office Breakdown: Tangled Climbs Above Potter

You can’t keep a good woman with long locks down.
Despite initially debuting in second place, Tangled reached new heights this week. The Disney feature climbed out of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow’s shadow to take the box office crown.
Tangled is now the second film this year to move up the ladder to the #1 spot. Another animated featured, How to Train Your Dragon, was the first.
The chart’s only new wide release, The Warrior’s Way, will likely fall out of the Top Ten by Week 2. The actioner starring Jang Dong-gun, Kate Bosworth and Geoffrey Rush started its run in ninth place.

Box Office Breakdown: Deathly Hallows Avoids Getting Tangled

Tangled's tresses weren't quite long enough to get past the Deathly Hallows last weekend.
Despite a $48.8 million debut ($68.7 million since Wednesday), Disney's latest animated feature found itself in a tight race. The film starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi landed firmly into second place -- approximately $300,000 shy of two-time winner Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Burlesque, featuring Christina Aguilera and Cher, rang up $11.9 million in ticket sales and a fourth-place finish. Although that figure isn't exactly something to brag about, it does represent Cher's biggest opening to date.
Promises of nudity couldn't get Love and Other Drugs into the Top 5. The Anne Hathaway/Jake Gyllenhaal movie earned less than $10 million and a sixth place debut. Meanwhile, Faster -- starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton -- grossed $8.5 million for seventh place.

Box Office Breakdown: Harry Potter Breaks Franchise Record

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 set a new record for the franchise this weekend – without the help of any 3-D prices.
The penultimate film in the series took in a magical $125 million, beating the previous mark set by 2005’s Goblet of Fire (which debuted to $102.7 million). The movie, which more than doubled what the other Top 10 entries did combined, also found itself ranked sixth on the all-time openers list.
In comparison, Paul Haggis’ The Next Three Days did about 5% of what Harry Potter accomplished. That’s the smallest open for Russell Crowe since 2006’s A Good Year.

Box Office Breakdown: Megamind is Unstoppable

Denzel Washington and Chris Pine could do nothing but watch Megamind speed past them at the box office.
Despite an early lead for the action film, Unstoppable lost a bit of steam. The movie, which opened to $8.1 million on Friday, slowed to a $22.7 million take and second place-finish by Monday. Of the five films Tony Scott has directed Washington in, this movie – also starring Chris Pine – debuted in the middle of the pack.
Two other wide releases found themselves perched in the Top 10 this weekend. Universal’s sci-fi entry, Skyline, dialed up $11.7 million for fourth place. Meanwhile, Morning Glory, starring Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton, produced $9.2 million ($11.8 million since Wednesday) – enough for fifth place.
