2008 Academy Award Nominations

The nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced bright and early Tuesday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Assuming the ceremony goes on as scheduled, you can see the live broadcast Sunday, February 24th on ABC.
Notable additions/omissions from today’s announcement:
- Based on the major categories alone, it looks like Michael Clayton may be the frontrunner. It received six nominations.
- Aside from one nod each in the Best Supporting Actor category, both Into the Wild and Charlie Wilson’s War were virtually shut out from the top prizes.
- Sweeney Todd - winner for Best Comedy/Musical at the Golden Globes - was shut out for Best Picture. Johnny Depp’s nom was the only major accolade for the film.
- A much-deserving Amy Adams did not receive a nom nor did her film, Enchanted.
- Atonement - the movie with the most nominations at the Globes - only received 3 in the major areas. The two main stars (Knightley, McAvoy) were also shut out.
- Cate Blanchett earned two nominations this year (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Angelina Jolie was not recognized for her heartbreaking performance in A Mighty Heart.

That Mail’s Got Bette Davis Eyes

Looking for a good reason to start a stamp collection? If this face can’t convince you, you’re born to write e-mails. The USPS will soon release the 14th stamp in their Legends of Hollywood series, a 41 cent masterpiece which will feature the face that once drove men to distraction - the one and only Bette Davis.
Nominated for ten Academy Awards, Davis won the honor twice (1935 and 38) and appeared in more than 100 films. Her long Hollywood career spanned fifty years and included two movies in which Bette portrayed Queen Elizabeth, one of the very few actresses to ever play the role in more than one feature film.
A true Hollywood Legend, the Bette Davis stamp will be released on the 100th anniversary of her birth.

Deborah Kerr: An Actress to Remember

Best known for her roles in 1957’s An Affair to Remember (opposite Cary Grant) and 1953’s From Here to Eternity (opposite the one and only Burt Lancaster in the famous beach scene), legendary actress Deborah Kerr has passed away at age 86. Kerr won the Golden Globe and received an Academy Award nomination during her lengthy Hollywood career, which included more than forty films.
Born in Scotland, Kerr blazed on the screen with her red hair and powerful voice. It was that same voice which helped Kerr land the role of a lifetime – Anna in The King and I. She starred opposite Yul Brenner, the sexiest bald man in the history of Hollywood (you wish, Telly Savales), making film history in the musical with classic songs like ‘Getting to Know You’. Kerr became a Bond girl at age 46 in the film Casino Royale.

Jennifer Hudson Joins ‘Sex And The City’ Movie

Jennifer Hudson is proving (to many jealous women out there) that her career did not peak with a silly little Oscar. The Academy Award winner has now been cast in the big screen version of Sex and the City.
The former American Idol contestant will be joining Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis in the Big Apple. After months of talk, production on the HBO show-turned film will finally begin next week.
While plot details have yet been leaked, we do know that Jennifer will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant (Louise). Any guesses out there as to what that means? Did Carrie become a full-time writer at Vogue? Does this mean she will actually be working outside of her apartment…in an office?

Silver Screen Queen Jane Wyman Bows Out

Jane Wyman, whose acting credits include more than forty movies, a starring role on Falcon Crest, and several awards, passed away at age ninety-three on Monday. Though Wyman won an http://movies.gearlive.com/movies/article/the-2007-academy-awards-3252007445/ Academy Award and enjoyed a lengthy Hollywood career, she is perhaps best known for being the first wife of actor-turned-politician Ronald Reagan. She passed away at her home in Palm Springs. The Wyman-Reagan marriage ended the same year the actress won the Oscar for her role in Johnny Belinda, and Jane remained close-mouthed to the press after Reagan became the President. She told reporters it was bad taste to talk about ex-husbands and wives, and at Reagan’s passing in 2004 said he was a “great, kind and gentle man.” Together, the couple had three children – one that did not survive, and one they jointly adopted. Wyman retreated from the public view after her nearly decade-long stint with Falcon Crest was over, putting a cap on her forty years in the entertainment industry.

2007 Academy Award Nominations

Somewhere out there director Bill Condon is trying to wake up from a very bad dream…
Just less than 24 hours ago, I was just telling my cohort Neil Estep that Dreamgirls would be nominated for Best Picture. Thankfully, no money was involved. Apparently what I should have said was, “Given that the film won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical, I think it will probably earn the most nominations this year—but not be nominated for Best Picture.” My theory? The voters were so Dreamgirled-out by the time they got to that part of the ballot…
The biggest shocker of the day? Probably. But there were plenty others. And may I saw how excited I am! Here are some of the more notable additions/omissions from this morning:
- We have one less Leo DiCaprio nomination in the Best Actor Category (in Blood Diamond, out The Departed) making room for Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. Woo hoo! Is it weird that I’m excited about this nomination…even though I’ve never seen the movie? But I’ve heard so much about it and have been waiting anxiously for the DVD to come out on on Feb. 13th. I just love it when underdogs are recognized. Could this be a surprise win ala Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) or Adrian Brody (The Pianist)?
