Tom Cruise to Pilot Top Gun Sequel

It appears Tom Cruise and director Tony Scott will be reteaming for another flyby in theaters.

Approximately 25 years after making Top Gun together, the two are expected to reunite for the film’s sequel – a movie that will feature Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, Cruise’s character from the 1986 film.

Although it was unclear what role – if any – Tom would play in the Paramount production, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) told Vulture the film could not exist without the Navy pilot.

"There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role,” McQuarrie wrote in an e-mail.

This statement doesn’t necessarily mean Cruise has signed up for the movie, just that his character is essential to the film. But, c’mon – the guy’s already shooting … we know he loves a sequel.
