Sequel News: Midnight Run, Death Race and More

Midnight Run: Over 20 years after the debut of Midnight Run, Robert De Niro is preparing to hit the road again. Universal Studios and writer Timothy Dowling (Role Models) are developing a new story about bounty hunter Jack Walsh. This time around, De Niro, who starred alongside Charles Grodin in the original, will be teamed with a younger actor.

Wanted: It turns out one of Hollywood’s most wanted ladies will not be doing Wanted 2 after all. Director Timur Bekmambetov was hoping to revive Angelina Jolie’s supposedly deceased character, but the actress opted out. (Early reports claim she chose to do Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity instead, but that apparently is not true.)  It’s not known what will happen to the script that was already finished.

Death Race: Not even death can end a race. Universal is revving their engines with Death Race 2, a prequel focusing on Frankenstein’s origin. Sean Bean, Luke Goss and Ving Rhames are all apart of the film currently shooting in South Africa.

Die Hard: The fact that we’ll probably always associate Bruce Willis with John McClane is apparently not a problem for the action star. While promoting his new movie Cop Out, Willis made a (somewhat) surprising reveal. “I think we’re going to do a Die Hard 5 next year,” he told MTV. While nothing’s been set in stone, Bruce said he would love for Len Wiseman - the director on 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard - to be involved with the next story, which he thinks should go. As for the story, Willis said he’d like to see it go “worldwide.”

American Pie: Although the original film has already spawned a number of straight-to-DVD sequels, Universal is aiming to go slightly back in time. Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have been tasked with writing American Pie 4, an installment that would be set some time after 2003’s American Wedding. While I would hope Alyson Hannigan has better things to do now, other actors from the original cast are reportedly willing to return to the franchise. (No word whether Tara Reid’s implants will get spots in the film.)
