Mercury, who had been diagnosed with AIDS, revealed his condition in November 1991. (The 45-year-old passed away one day after the announcement.) Freddie’s final days will not be included in the film.

The biopic is being developed with support from Queen’s surviving members: Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. It’s unclear at this time whether Cohen will actually perform the songs or simply lip-synch to Mercury’s vocals.

Although a director has not yet been selected, production on the as-yet-untitled film is slated to begin next year.
