Brokeback Mountain Comes to the Stage
Two years after Brokeback Mountain won three Academy Awards comes news of another plan for Annie Proulx’s tale. The New York City Opera has just commissioned composer Charles Wuorinen to adapt the love story for the stage.
Wuorinen said the relationship between Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar was something he has always wanted to tackle. “Ever since encountering Annie Proulx’s extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so.”
While some may think this production is an attempt to capitalize on Heath Ledger’s recent death, the opera’s scheduled date may change a few minds. Brokeback Mountain will not even open until 2013—a whole five years from now.
