Bret Easton Ellis has retracted his love for troubled actress Lindsay Lohan.

The writer recently opened up about the critical and box office failure of The Canyons, a 2012 film he wrote which starred Lohan and famed porn actor James Deen. "I think where we went wrong was with the casting of Lindsay Lohan. Now I don’t mean she wasn’t good in it, she was very good in the movie. I mean that suddenly The Canyons has become the Lindsay Lohan film," he explained.

Ellis - who wrote the novels from which American Psycho and The Rules of Attraction were adapted - went on to clarify his statement about why Lindsay's attachment damaged the low-budget erotic thriller:

"Lindsay’s reputation follows her everywhere. And the moment that we cast Lindsay Lohan, the movie became something else. It stopped becoming the DIY movie that could make it into part of the trainwreck of the Lindsay Lohan narrative... I think the hatred for the movie when it initially came out was so disproportionate to what the movie actually was… I think at a certain point, people were rooting for the movie to fail... And I think that’s why when the movie was eventually released, people were gleeful about massacring it."

Despite its $250,000 budget - which is modest in comparison to most Hollywood films - The Canyons only managed to bring in $51,000 at the box office.

Lohan hasn't impressed her Canyons co-star James Deen, either, as he previously compared her to a child lashing out on set.
