Youth In Revolt, both a critically acclaimed novel by C.D. Payne and a failed MTV mini-series, has been adapted into a screenplay and began production early this year. This original and hilarious black comedy will star Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad) as the story’s overly sex-crazed protagonist, Nick Twisp, who - along with an inconvenient hair trigger on his erectile response - involves himself in arson, car theft, homelessness and even an identity change to satisfy his pubescent desires and finally lose his virginity. Although no other cast members have been confirmed, Cera’s recently built reputation for the role as the awkward teen with no grip on a decent romantic or sex life (which rightfully won him 2 nominations for Best Young Actor this year) will certainly do great justice for the role.
New York Times
Youth In Revolt is a story about 16-year-old Nick Twisp who, in the midst of pursuing a girl named Sheeni Saunders to be his destined love and the one to release him from the shackles of virginity, deals with divorced parents, rebellion and the typical (and especially non-typical) pains of growing up as a teenager with an overbearing libido all at the same time. Twisp’s overblown literary voice is one that pours intense diction out of its pores, fueled by intellectual pretension, Woody Allen-like punch lines and sexual double entendres.
Written in three parts, the novel that is the inspiration for the upcoming film carries entertaining twists (ones that give M. Night Shyamalan a run for his money) and schemes that backfire with painfully embarrassing results. All this is delivered in a combination of powerful narrative and journal-like entries that reel you into a comedically-haunting dysfunctional life.
From his best friends, estranged father with a 19-year-old girlfriend and the both brainy and beautiful Sheeni Saunders herself, Youth In Revolt’s plethora of colorful characters - from even the most minor - are impossible to forget. Nick Twisp himself is, without a doubt, this generation’s Holden Caulfield, with a much more resounding voice for adolescents wrapped in the sex-driven and oppressive society around them.
With screenplay written by Gustin Nash, Youth In Revolt will be directed by Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl, Six Feet Under), and is set to hit theaters by early 2009.
