Total Immersions D’Fusion Technology
Okay, I know this isn’t the Revolution - but we all know that Nintendo has been talking a lot about how they plan to introduce a new way of playing games with their next generation console. Many a gamer has been scratching their head, theorizing on what exactly the technology would bring to the table. As soon as I saw this video, I thought “THAT"S revolutionary.” Check it out - Total Immersion’s D’Fusion software solution allows for real-time video capture and perfect merges between video streams and 3D objects. All you need is a camera, a few sensors, and a HUD. This turns your world into an immersive gaming experience, where you are IN the game…or where the game is all around you. Words cant really describe this, so just check out the video. What do you think?
Edit: Here is another video file (80 MB)

Immediately what comes to my mind is that you could have a play mat where you can play games like an RTS on your living floor.
Imagine this: Roll out a plastic map across your floor, put on goggles, take a control pad into your hands, and start playing Warcraft right there. Of course, this could be networked on the Internet, so you would see your opponents’ characters moving across the floor.
This technology could also be used to present a version of The Sims, or Black & White—or any other kind of “god game”... wearing interactive controller gloves, you could pick up your Sim or monster.
Now this technology could truly be the next big thing in video gaming.

Oh yeah, and how could I forget the sports games? Imagine playing football, basketball, soccer, etc. this way.

if you think even bigger than a mat you could efectivly use a whole room or house, if it can utilize multiple cameras you could, with goggles run around your house shooting doom characters. it could be the next step towards decent VR

hehe now that you mentioned creepy, imagine playing a game like resident evil or silent hill in that type of environment, the game woudl be insane, just imagine a zombie or some messed up looking creature jumping out of no where to get at you!

Very impressive. Can’t wait to see how it evolves and to see it in retail.

and how long til someone blugeons their friend to death after playing a scary FPS in their own house?
people could truly lose their marbles after playing something “first person” too long in their own home…

All I could think was:
I’ll Buy That.
And I have no doubt that I will.

“anyone know when they will be commercialized, or available to playing.”
don’t you think that’s a bit early to ask?
Reply to this: comment | thread
While my initial thought was “this will take the fps to an amazing level”, that was soon replaced with “if the porn industry gets a hold of this.. no one is going to care about gaming”

It’s pretty cool to see someone making a slick video and trying to take this public, out of the research labs. There are still some serious limitations to having AR work in real situations (this video hides them quite nicely), but the technology is getting closer. Some of the ideas floated in the comments here have actually been tried (by me and others), and so I thought I’d point you at some things that you might find cool.
Some cute examples: use google to search for ARQuake (some folks in Australia built it) and AR Pacmac (Singapore). In my group, at Georgia Tech, I have students working on some AR games (a puzzle game called Butterfly Effect, and ARCraft, an AR version of Warcraft, which someone here mentioned as being potentially cool!), but we don’t have much up on the web yet.
The biggest limit, right now, is physical touch (haptic feedback) and a general lack of knowledge inside the computer about the physical world. So, the porn and contact sport ideas are a long way off (you can’t touch the virtual stuff). Plus, even in the video you can see that the physical world doesn’t always interact correctly (notice when the demoer’s left hand gets hidden by the lightsaber or flower that should be behind it).
Those problems aside, I’m pretty enthusiastic about the potential for AR games! If you pick the right game, and design it carefully, these limitations won’t necessarily matter.

Awesome video! Awesome idea!
It’s still a little buggy. The only thing I see wrong with it is the tracking of dynamic/moving objects (the left hand for instance), but with a little R&D, I’m positive this can be overcome. As for haptic feedback; has anybody ever thought about magnets?

And I wonder why no one thought of the tremendous applications for virtual sex

This is the second, more official, demo I’ve seen on their tech. The first is here:

[Realplayer]
W/R/T the dynamic/motion concern noted above, note the interplay in the linked video between the revolving door [real] and the litle red car [CG].

screw video games, although that would be cool. no ones mentioned the possibilities outside gaming. that stuff would revolutionize building, landscaping and anything like that. think what the military will be doing with that kind of technology. the part where he shows the inside of the building is probably the scariest thing.

The non-gaming applications are what originally was driving the technology to be developed. If you really want to see what people are doing with AR, search on the web! Industrial apps (maintenance and repair), tours and education, medical applications (superimposition of scan data on patients), building renovation and on-site visualization, etc. And, of course, military applications (both live battlefield concepts, and training).

Are there shadows?

Yeah.. and you could buy like some space, but you wont build a house on top of it, instead you get some of those cameras and sensors and you’re done. Though it’s going to be hard with the 2nd floor.

Long ago I vowed that I would never again purchase a standalone gaming syste (read: one that wasn’t first and foremost a home computer as well) until true virtual reality hit the market, at which point I would surrender to the machine and never leave the house again. Looks like that day is coming sooner than I thought. Goodbye, cruel world, I’m leaving you today, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

Hey Tweaq,
Some guys did do that a while back. I don’t think they ever got the guns to work though. Still kind of a cool idea, to be able to run around your local college shooting at things only you and your friends can see.
Heres the link btw,

First of all, it would be easy for someone to create an AI character that interacts with the enviroment correct? Well, YOU are part of the enviroment as well. Then if the system also contains a way to motion capture the movements of the player, the player can interact with the A.I character directly.

hey Nave316 i know what you mean thtat would be cool but its not real enough.. it needs to be as real as the holodeck.. anyways my idea is just use gloves that sense all the objects like when your holding a gun for a fps the glove only allows u to hold it like a real gun know what im sayin?? the glove wont allow you to put your hand through some objects and etc.. that be cool.. that means you can pretty much have any kind of controller!!! like a fake ps2 or gamecube even arcade joysticks! maybe even a fake keyboard. anyways the video doesn’t work and i knot knwo what the hell the kitchen video is about.. heres my link

Good evening. I believe in God, only I spell it Nature.
I am from Morocco and learning to speak English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “These cheap flights to europe are discounted tickets at the lowest rates.”
Thanks for the help :(, Kefira.
