Posted by Oscar M. Cantu Categories: PC / Laptop

Seagate Notebook Hard DriveIn today’s high tech world, when talking about hard drive space, we have become accustomed to the large amounts of data that hard drives can hold these days. Of course, it’s no wonder with music and video downloads becoming more popular every day. So why not carry around all those files on your laptop? In response to user demand for more space on their portable computers, Seagate has announced its new 120GB and 100GB hard drive will begin shipping. The 120 GB hard drives are the largest of their kind and will be available at 5400 RPM speeds. The 100 GB drive hits 7200 RPM. The company claims these new drives have more efficient power consumption over previous models and should also be a lot quieter. The drives are expected to hit the market in May. Check out the full press release after the jump.

SEAGATE EXTENDS REACH IN NOTEBOOK PC MARKET WITH 7200-RPM SPIN SPEED AND 100GB CAPACITY

Analysts see incremental market opportunities for Seagate as 5,400-rpm and 7,200-rpm drives increase in popularity SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.—14 June 2004— Seagate Technology (NYSE:STX) announced today it has expanded its line of notebook hard drives, unveiling two new versions of its popular Momentus notebook hard drive family. The new Momentus 5400.2 drives increase Seagate’s notebook hard drive capacities by offering up to two discs and industry-leading areal densities of 50GB per disc, for total capacities up to 100GB. The new Momentus 7200.1 drive will also introduce a new 7,200-rpm spin speed to the Momentus family, the industry’s fastest, adding a new level of performance to what is now one of the broadest sets of notebook storage products in the industry. With the industry’s latest technology, Seagate’s Advanced Manufacturing leadership, and the industry’s most comprehensive compatibility and benchmark testing for the most reliable storage solutions ever, the world’s leading notebook PC makers can rely on the industry’s only independent supplier of notebook drives. The new Seagate Momentus 5400.2 drive offers a huge 100GB capacity in a 2.5-inch form factor, and enhanced productivity with its 5,400-rpm spin speed for almost 50 percent more performance than 4,200-rpm drives - yet it lets users work longer with battery consumption like a traditional 4,200-rpm notebook drive. With high resistance to 800Gs of non-operating shock, its robust design and high shock tolerance enable mobility in rugged notebook operating environments. “Individuals and corporations increasingly are choosing mobile PCs over desktop PCs,” said Dave Reinsel, program director of storage research, IDC. “As users transition from desktop to mobile PCs, they do not want to sacrifice performance, so higher spin-speed drives are a logical choice. Seagate’s Momentus 5400.2 and 7200.1 will provide a significant performance boost over 4,200-rpm notebook drives and offer incremental revenue opportunity for the company as 5,400-rpm and 7,200-rpm drives increase in popularity.” The new Seagate Momentus 7200.1 is a 2.5-inch 7,200-rpm drive with up to 100GB that’s ideal for high-performance, workstation-class notebook PCs. Momentus 7200.1 is also a great fit in mobile gaming systems, small-form-factor PCs and specific non-PC applications, including non-mission-critical blade servers, MP3 players, printers and copiers. With the highest-available notebook performance, it increases users’ productivity while on the road. And with Seagate’s renowned low power consumption, it maximizes battery life and lets users work longer. Momentus 7200.1 will be available with both Serial ATA and Ultra ATA interfaces, and features the same robust design and high shock tolerance associated with Momentus drives, with 800Gs non-operating shock tolerance to enable mobility in rugged notebook operating environments as well as non-PC and industrial applications. With Seagate’s unique G-Force Protection, these new Momentus hard drives also perform better during operation than competitive drives when subjected to high levels of shock, and when vibration occurs in multi-drive environments such as entry-level server applications. And Seagate’s unique QuietStep ramp load technology enables whisper-quiet load/unload acoustics. Seagate’s Momentus notebook hard drive family has been embraced by notebook PC makers worldwide, shipping to almost all major brands including Acer, Alienware, Dell, HP, Fujitsu Siemens, Legend, NEC Computers International and many more. Momentus is also well positioned for the whitebook segment, which is emerging as a new market among independent System Integrators in the distribution channel. A whitebook is essentially a “bare bones” notebook computer, lacking only memory, hard drive and CPU. It’s generic enough for System Integrators to customize and takes about 10 minutes to build, providing a simplified way for System Integrators to get into the notebook market. Leading notebook computer makers and specialty suppliers have chosen the Seagate Momentus drive for its unique combination of high performance, low battery consumption, high reliability and low acoustics. Seagate is the worldwide leader in the design, manufacturing and marketing of hard disc drives, providing products for a wide range of Enterprise, PC, Notebook and Consumer Electronics applications. The company is committed to delivering award-winning products, customer support and reliability, to meet the world’s growing demand for information storage.
