Archos 604 WiFi Competes With Zune

Archos 604

Attempting to give the Zune a run for its money, the Archos 604 WiFi offers a viable alternative to web surfing or exchanging data over the Internet. With its 4.5-inch 450 x 272 touchscreen, Windows file sharing, and a version of the Opera browser, the Archos can record up to 30 GB from any home entertainment source and holds up to 130 hours of TV, 85 movies, 15,000 tunes, or 300,000 photos. It also sports a removable battery and kickstand for tabletop viewing.

Go for the optional DVR Station accessory and you can record TV in MPEG-4 with Archo’s StationBright 4.3-inch TFT LCD or transfer photos from your digital cameras. You can also turn the Archos into a camcorder with zoom, video effects, and music. The 604 is available online now for $349.99.

Nice screen at 4.5 inches! And at 450x272 that’s mightly close to 16:9 widescreen format.

I like the kickstand too. Archos has really thought this through.

At $349 though, it’s $100 more than Zune, and a lot more of a pocketful. Still, a pretty intriguing product.

i agree completly with harvey - its a sick little toy. but at an extra 100$ is it truly worth it? thats for consumers to decide, but just keep in mind - zune is from microsoft, one of the largest longstanding corporations in the world. they definitly have a few tricks up their sleeves, they arnt huge for nothing.

You’ll notice on Archos.com they never mention anything about WiFi.

There is an older model with no WiFi from what I can gather online.

I have seen the 604 WiFi at Samsclub.com and in there brick and mortars for $369. Other websites have it for $450 and up which I’d hope includes the docking station also.

This review is a mish-mash.  There are two Archos 604’s, one with and one without wifi.  The 604 with wifi says “604 wifi”.  It’s about $100 more than the plain 604.

As for the comparison with the Zune, the 604 wifi outclasses it.  The 604 wifi has a bigger screen and real wifi, the kind you can use to browse the web and check your email.  It has a touch sensitive screen and pop-up keyboard when you need to type.  The Zune’s wifi is limited to music sharing between Zunes, something that’s not going to be very useful until there are a lot of Zune players out there.  Further, the 604 wifi, with an optional docking station, will let you record from TV.  The Zune doesn’t even have that capability.

In short, the question to ask is if $200 more for the 604 wifi, compared to the Zune, is worth it for you to have internet browsing and potential to record TV, DVD’s, etc. to your media player.
