RK Launcher

For all Windows users out there that are jealous of the unique user interface offered by OS X’s dock, this one is for you. A brilliant little Windows application called RK Launcher is now in beta, and it adds a dock-like interface to Windows XP.  With support for themes, PNG’s and ICO’s and with smooth amazing animations,RK Launcher is a versatile and great taskbar replacement.

well i tried out this program and was not satified.

It does not start with windows and if you close it (on purpose or on mistake) any customizing you do to it will be erased. And if you like to shut down windows like i do (Alt+F4) chances are that you will close out the mac bar. They should make it where it’s not so easy to close where it behaves like a toolbar rather than an app.

one other thing that bothered me is that you can not drag trash into the recycle bin like you can on a mac.

On the other had it is highly customizable, looks nice, and brings that sleek mac touch to windows.

The problems that the mac bar has i seriously hope is a reflection of the project still being in beta. I am interested in seeing this project in it’s final stage.

“if you close it (on purpose or on mistake) any customizing you do to it will be erased”

Right click on the dock then go to settings>behavior and make sure that “save changes on exit” and save items on exit” are both checked.

I like ObjectDock a lot.  There is a good amount of docklets for it and after a little customization it does way more than I need.  The only crappy part is the drag and drop in the recycle bin.  Otherwise its tight, check out my ride smile

That looks hot Wolfe! smile

One thing that annoys me with RK is the fact the IE is represented as a clock.  I know that’s not a big deal, but it would seem like they would have the “E” logo, something similar to what Wolfe has.  I’d like to see it have an icon for Firefox as well.

I decided to change a few things.  I’m always tinkering with it tongue laugh

I love the world clock.  Its so kewl smile

That is how I had mine a couple days ago but i changed it since. In that I was using Konfabulator for the widgets, ObjectDock, ObjectBar, and I might have been using FlyAKiteOSX. I tried RK but I didn’t really like it that much. I am pretty happy with ObjectDock. Hey Wolfeman where did you get most of your icons?
And to Devin, you can just drag ‘n’ drop a shortcut to the bar like FireFox

try http://www.wincustomize.com , they have a lot of good amount of free goodies to customize with including objectdock.

I find it hillarious that so many PC users are trying to make their PC into a mac! heres something for ya, BUY A MAC, cause they rule.

Or how about get all the benfits of both without 1-button mouses…

OSX 10.1+ fully supports a two button mouse. You just have to buy your own!

Almost everytime I go to that site the server is overloaded or I get some kind of error. :(

I use flyakity osx and you get the option to choose either object dock or RK launcher, i chose object dock first because it was first on the list to choose! I kept crashing on me for some reason, instead of trying to fix it. i uninstalled the app and choose rklauncher. I love it. I doesn’t close on me and comes up on startup unlike told in these comments. Here’s flyakyte with the rklauncher.

Thanks Snakeeyes!

I DLed Objectdock to check it out, and at first it kept messing up.  I could run my mouse over the icons and they would grow, but nothing would happen when I clicked them.  I was about to give up, but I decided to uninstall/reinstall once, to give it a chance.  It’s working fine now, but I’ll keep RK Launcher incase OD messes up in the future.  I played with them both, but I like OD options over RK’s.

The wincustomize site must have been having trouble earlier, because now it’s running smooth.  They’ve got some nice stuff there.  Maybe I’ll post a dektop pic soon.smile

O.K. there she is! smile  I’m really liking Objectdock right now!

It’s amazing to see how far some people will go to customize their PC’s. Great screenshots guys - you have taken this to a form of art!

How do you get RKLauncher to start when windows starts?  I copied RKLauncher.exe to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and when windows starts it says RKLauncher cannot be loaded because RKLauncher.dll can’t be found.  When I copy RKLauncher.dll into the startup directory as well, windows gives me an “open with…” dialogue, and the dock still doesnt load on its own.  Whats going on?

Also having the problem making it start on startup.  I love the bar, but getting that Rklauncher.dll thing drives me nuts.  any help would be appreciated!  Thanks

to make it run at startup you need to copy more than just that one dll, i just copied all of the files in the RKLauncher folder. once u do that, select all of the items, except RKLauncher.exe and right click, select properties, and then click hidden. this should make it so the dls (and other files) won’t appear when you log in (or turn on the computer)
i forget, but i think i might have had another problem with startup, so i just opened the quicklaunch toolbar, got rid of what was already in it, added a shortcut to RKLauncher, locked the taskbar, and got rid of all the RK Launcher stuff at startup, so now when i turn on my computer i just click on the RKLauncher button and im set to go. (later on i might try to launch it from a batch file)

You need to copy a shortcut to the program into the Startup folder, not the actual program itself. That way, when it tries to load the dll to go with it, it’ll know where to find it as it’ll link back to where the program and dll actually are.

Try right-clicking on the RKLauncher.exe file, click on copy, go to the Startup folder, right-click again, and click on Paste Shortcut.

i kinda have an idea so rk launcher wud start on windows startup..try installing quick startup n u cn set the launcher to start at windows startup(damn, there’s jus so many startup words, hope its not suck up hehe)

Dude, take a look at AWN for linux. Mac dock. But…

It came before mac.

That’s right. Mac stole the dock from Avant window navigator.

I set up mine to hide and i am now unable to change the dock properties… there is nowhere that i can right click on it that will allow me to get back into the properties of the dock so that i can change size, etc
