Twenty Years Later, New York Rangers Do it Again

Before I go any further, let me clarify. This, in the grand scheme of things, means nothing. Alright, now that we got that out of the way, let’s continue.

With a Friday night victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, the New York Rangers won their third game of the season to start 3-0 for the first time since 1989. Yes, for the first time since the John Ogrodnick era. In other words, for the first time in Steven Stamkos’ entire life.

Will it affect how they finish come playoff time? Probably not, but fresh off three consecutive playoff appearances and the acquisitions of Wade Redden and Marcus Naslund, it’s one more reason to be excited about a team traditionally easy to forget.

In the 20 years since, the Rangers have had eight winning seasons, one Stanley Cup and a painful streak of seven long years without making the post-season.

Rangers Brandon Dubinsky, Wade Redden, Aaron Voros and Nikolai Zherdev all beat recently-acquired Cristobal Huet in the 4-2 victory at Madison Square Garden.
