E3 2005: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi Impressions

DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi

Atari has yet another Dragon Ball Z game called Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi.  This game is pretty amazing.  In the previous Budokai games, you were limited to a certain area, but in Budokai Tenkaichi it’s a free for all.  I played this game for 15 minutes and I was blown away.  The levels are completely interactive and destructible, more than 4 different gameplay modes, over 60 playable characters,  controllable flight ability, and more.  This game really grasps the DBZ world and puts it on your console.

The controls are pretty much the same as the other DBZ games, with the exception of special abilities. You only have to push one or two buttons to use your special abilities rather than a sequence of commands. The graphics in this version are about the same as the second installment. The cell shading is great and makes it seem more like a true DBZ game.

I personally think that this installment of the Budokai series is the first one to really grasp the DBZ world. The free flight, interactive environments, and the ability to roam the fields makes this the best DBZ game yet!  There were only several characters unlocked for me to play at E3 so I can’t go to in depth on moves, but when all the other characters are unlocked I bet the game is even better. Dragon Ball Z®: Budokai Tenkaichi will be exclusive to PS2 and is slated for release in Nov. 2005.
