I dont know about everyone else, but they are pissing me off… They are everywhere! If you need money ask people to donate, ads are worse!

If you didn’t know there is an amazon button. And he’s answered this plenty of times. Deal with it.

Donation boxes have been setup through Amazon & Paypal.  You can feel free to donate to the cause of keeping GL ad free, but unfortunately, the cost of bandwidth has gotten to the point that this is no longer a side project—serious cash is used to keep this site open…the ads are required to generate some income to cover costs.

Lezam -

Wanna just hand over the hundreds of dollars per month that it costs to run the site? If so, PM me and you can send via Paypal. Each month that you pay the required amount to cover the bandwidth, I will remove all the ads from the site.

Thanks!

can we put in the t.o.s. “do not complain about the ads. in doing so, you will incur a 5 million dollar fine.”?

There are many companies who offer unlimited bandwith… Why dont you use them?

Unlimited bandwidth offers usually skimp on other features. First of all, Gear Live requires its own dedicated server, for days (like today) where we get hit with Slashdot traffic.

Plus I am trying to make a living from this site.

There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth—please read the fine print for those offers—you cannot exceed more than 3GB of transfer daily, or 90GB monthly [or something similar]—if you exceed speed restrictions they can cut your service without notice—

Basically if you run your site like this and you receive heavy traffic they WILL shut you down.  They don’t make money giving away bandwidth, they are like any other business out there.

I learned that the hardway.  I had a video site that on my first month had the plug pulled because I was transferring roughly 100GB/day—and at peak times I was transferring 10-25MB/sec from their server basically crippling everything on their network at which point they promptly pulled the plug and directed me to their ToS.

Trust me, you get what you pay for when it comes to webhosts. I guarantee you that CNN, New York Times, etc. wouldn’t go with a webhost like that. Nor will we.

True dat. Also, its a good idea to buy your own dedicated server and host it. It only costs 60 dollars some places and that could be cheaper then what you pay.

lezam, since you find it so affordable to maintain and run this website, how about you pay for it. we’ll all think you’re a super guy for it. we’ll also forget about this craptacular thread. 😊

I’m sorry, but that new ad on the gear live homepage in the middle looks horribly out of place.

What the hell is this?  I’ve scanned my computer using NAV, Housecall, Ad-aware, spybot, cwshredder, hijack this, and even the MS spyware scanner, and I keep getting this pop up.  It pops up when I come to this site only, and I’m on DSL.
