iRiver has been around for close to a year now. It remains in obscurity because iPod can afford massive advertising. I’m selling my ipod and getting an iriver because I don’t want to pay for the stupid dock, so I can hook my player up to the stereo, a voicerecorder, FM radio player, and have to pay an extra $50 just to have my battery replaced. iRiver comes with all of this and the battery is user replaceable. Here’s some specs:

# Plays over 600 hours of digital music*
# Up to 16 hours of battery life
# Supports MP3, WMA, ASF, WAV and OGG music files
# Ultra-fast USB 2.0 transfers (up to 40 times faster than USB 1.0)
# Integrated FM tuner
# Backlit remote control with 4-line display
# Built-in voice recorder
# Intuitive music navigation
# Real-time MP3 encoding (no PC required)
# 20GB of internal storage
# Store or transfer files of any type
# Extra-large, 8-line, backlit LCD
# Rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery
# Optical input and output
# Upgradeable to future formats and features

It comes with:

# Backlit remote control with 4-line display
# iRiver earphones
# Carrying case
# Installation software CD
# AC adapter
# USB 2.0 cable
# Line-in cable
# External microphone
# Printed user manual

The only downside is the user interface which has a learning curve which I don’t mind.

iPod for life.

I had an iRiver CD Player before, and battery life was horrible. I was lucky to get 2 hours out of it. And I only had it for maybe 3 months before the battery started sucking.

The battery life on this has been confirmed by a lot of people, some on this board as well.

The iRiver ihp-120 I own goes easily for 12 - 16 hours between full charges.  I have never ran out of battery even after a full day of commuting on foot, train, and car and then not charging it over night and repeating the next day.

People need to not be fooled by the pretty looks of the iPod and look at the features and power of the iRiver.

The H320 is running about $350 or little higher. Honestly I would rather just get an H120 because I would never upload pictures to it and I want a remote.  The picture viewer just made it bulkier and doesn’t really add much. If you want a picture viewer, video player, mp3 player, all with a card reader installed get yourself an Archos mini400. All of that and it’s the same price and barely larger than an iPod.

Anyone know how well the iRiver H320 was rated on rating sites/magazines? I am debating on whether to get the iPod or the iRiver from mp3players4free.com since I haven’t been able to get an ipod from http://www.freeipods.com

To be honest I tried out both the iRiver 120 and 320 at Best Buy along with the iPod and I didn’t like the way any of them organized the files nor the controls. I guess I’ll just have to wait for something magical to come out.
