I think it’s an excellent idea—One thing though, doesn’t PHP boards have a member statistics page?

My only concern with the member update is that it makes people post just to increase there post count and it makes for a lot of pretty cruddy posts that lack any substance.

One word answer posts dont really add anything and the member update will encourage it.

I wouldn’t do it manually since it is built in.  As far as substance is concerned, you’re right on that front.
