I think this suggestion should really dictate how contests should be run from now on.
If you plan on using a point like system such as this contest I would suggest a ruling like this.
You want people to contribute to GearLive. So instead of awarding points for a post (you still can with my new idea) you should grant a large sum of points for contributing stuff that matters.
Like:
Submit an Article
Have an Article published on gearlive
Review (Album, Book, Movie) (Could end up finding yourself a new person to write articles in these catigories expanding gearlive even more)

That way people are involved in a good sense rather than just seeing who can post the most its more effort thought out.

Fully Agreed. The Review bit is gonna be good for Gear Live it self. I have seen a spammer WIN the Dragon on one of the giveaway websites, don’t want to see that happening again.
