One of my favorite games, Deus Ex majorly deserves a Megathread

Deusex-top.jpg

Deus Ex (abbreviated DX) is a cyberpunk-themed first-person shooter/computer role-playing game developed by Ion Storm Inc. and published by Eidos Interactive. It was released on June 22, 2000. Receiving almost universally positive reviews from critics and general industry acclaim, the game was a frequent candidate for, and winner of Game of the Year awards.

Set in a dystopian world during the 2050s, the central plot follows rookie “United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition” (UNATCO) agent JC Denton as he sets out to combat terrorist forces which have become increasingly prevalent in a world slipping ever further into chaos. As the plot unfolds, he becomes increasingly immersed in a deep and ancient conspiracy, encountering fictional recreations of organizations such as Majestic 12, the Illuminati, and the Hong Kong Triads throughout the course of his journey. Ultimately, Denton unravels the goal of the conspiracy: A world oppressivly dominated and controlled by the social and economic elite.

Deus Ex is an open-ended, first-person shooter, role playing game. The game features a complex bio-modification system which can be used to upgrade the characters abilities. (i.e. The player can give himself regenerative tissue biomods or the ability to run at tremendous speeds.) The game has multiple skills the player can focus on. For example, a guard blocks a door down a long corridor that the player needs to get through. The player could use a nearby Security Console to tap into a nearby bots targeting systems and program it to kill the guard and then unlock the door through the console. Or he can use a cloaking bio-modification to sneak by the guard, use a lock pick to bypass the door and move through. A more direct approach can be taken by attacking the guard head on and using remote explosives to breach the door.

The skill system is very complex and requires managing. This means you can just expect to get head shots every time with a sniper rifle if he is not trained in using rifles. The same goes for hacking. If the player is untrained in hacking computers or security consoles, they will have to search around for datacubes pertaining the proper username and password.

A deep story, addicting techno soundtrack, great combat, and multiple ways to complete objectives make this an amazing. Many would call this a spiritual successor to the System Shock series. I have beaten this game well over a dozen times, and haven’t tired of it yet. I always come back to it every few months and play it again. The great part about it is far from short. It takes me on average 20 hours to complete.

PS2 Intro

Important Mod

Project HDTP

Project HDTP
Project HDTP is a High Definition Texture Package for the original Deus Ex game. The original in-game textures were of a very low resolution, some textures even being as low as 32x32. However, it was discovered that it is possible to increase the resolution of those textures to a maximum of 256. This has been tested in-game and we have witnessed the start of a massive graphical overhaul.

1. Features: All new remodelled and retextured Objects.
2. Objects will sport a high resolution of 256.
3. Brand new character models and matching high resolution skins.
4. Character models are more individual. For example each guard/trooper type will now have its own model instead of using the generic one.
5. Character models now have their own fingers (removing the ‘mittens’ effect).
6. Models that require animation will be full animated from scratch to compliment the higher quality feel.
7. Characters look darker and more moody to enhance the game play experience.
8. Vehicle models and weapons will be remodelled, skinned and reanimated.

Nice Thread wink  I’m confused though, are we supposed to talk about the game now? or is this just informational?

God, Deus Ex is by far one of my most favorite games of all time. I’ve played it more times than I can count, through a multitude of playstyles, weapons, routes, etc. I wish games these days were as well thought out and involved as Deus Ex is, todays games are simply lacking the immersion factor; but hopefully Bioshock will bring that back. wink

Great post!

Never played the first Deus Ex, only the Invisible Wars. Which was one of my top 5 favorite Xbox games.

Invisible Wars was terrible! It was so freaking dumbed down that my IQ dropped thirty points for every hour I played it. And as for Andy, it’s both of those things. wink

Really? I guess I would really love the first one then. Maybe I’ll take a look at it one day.

Yeah, a lot of members of the Deus Ex community simply refuse to acknowledge Invisible War as the sequel to Deus Ex since it was so damn terrible. They took an awesome system, removed all rpg aspects, made the game much shorter, less exciting, took out the music (the music in Deus Ex rocks), dumbed down what little systems were remaining, and overall killed the experience. I highly recommend steering clear of Invisible War if you have not played it.

Yeah, Deus Ex.  I very well remember that game.  I was so young then…

Anyways, I didn’t exactly like Invisible War either.  I didn’t absolutely hate it, but there was too much wrong with it.  It dumbed down the interface specifically so console users could play it, the grid-based inventory system was gone which kept the physical size of the weapons from being taken into account of how much you could carry, the upgrade system was cut down to that of a single menu with a limited set of powers, and the multiple ammunition types for individual weapons from the original were cut down to a single universal ammo that is used for all guns.  It was a MASSIVE jump from the original and did not really follow a lot of the important formulas that made Deus Ex what it was.  It’s too bad too, Invisible War had potential but wasted it on being way too console-centric.

I hope that with the recently announced Deus Ex 3 that they have learned from their mistakes.  Too bad Ion Storm is no longer around to do the series.  They weren’t a half-bad company if you ask me.

both deus ex 1 and 2 were amazing games for their times.  Play them on PC NOT XBOX/ps2.  Well worth the buy - even today.

I tested this graphics upgraded and it didn’t work for me.

If you get the last patch for this game from EIDOS website though, it does upgrade the graphics as well.  |If you can’t get it on there website, try http://www.3dgamers.com as well.

I had to uninstall this game and reinstall the thing because, what happens with this graphics upgrade is it stops you from picking any weapon after you saved.  You are stuck with whatever weapon you chose before you saved the game.

If you install the game and then the latest patch which is deusexmppatch1112fm.exe, the game looks a lot better and runs like a dream on XP.  I didn’t bother testing it on Vista.  Well let’s face it; Vista is a micky mouse piece of S**T.

Personally I don’t have a problem reviving dead threads as long as they are or can still be made relevent. Differen’t people commented who presumably missed it on its first time around so I don’t see it as such a bad thing in this situation.

Even in the case of ladders, when simple hand-over-hand coordination is required, only one in four zombies will succeed.

That’s exactly why I revived it.

If somebody came across it and had something to add, that’s one thing.  “Bumping” it just for the sake un-burying it seems a bit much.
