Hey guys, I am planning on buying a laptop for college in the next month or two and was wondering what I should be looking for and where I should buy one from. Thanks
ibms are very good…they do cost a good chunk of change tho.
dells, eh, they’re alright.
i bought a fujitsu and have no complaints.
what are you looking for? do you want a desktop replacement. those will be rather large and cumbersome, but will pack a lot of power. They do drain a lot of battery life though, so expect to either live off the wall or recharge ever 2 hours. these get extremely hot too. but these are the sacrifices for having great power.
ultra portables are nice, cuz they’re thin and light, but they have less power. centrino is pretty good, pretty comparable to the p4, but without hyperthreading. there is very low heat too, so you won’t burn your balls while its on your lap. you will pay a premium for centrinos tho.
Thats the thing. I have a desktop right now and like the power/gaming ability. On the other hand, I want to be able to take a laptop with me to do work outside the dorms and will probally stop playing many games and stick to my Xbox for my gaming needs. I’ll check out the IBM thinkpads now.
I’ve got a desktop and just bought a Dell 700M. I love it. Extremely portable, 5 lbs. 12” WXGA monitor, 1.4GHz Centrino.. . Since it seems that you’re only gonna use this lappy to get work done when you’re not in your room, I suggest something similar.
I’ve been looking around, and actully found a pretty good deal on a efurbished HP through Costco. Link
Costco is generally very good about their return policies, but what do you guys think about this one or HP laptops in general?
What is the problem with a HP? I’ve decided that I want a laptop with 512 ram 40+gb hd and a pentium M with centrino and with good sound. Are there any other options I can look into?
Powerbooks are powerful, light, have a great battery life, and come with a DVD burner and wireless. Plus, mac people are just cooler
ok, well i won’t comment on his last statement, but apple makes great laptops as well. you should consider checking them out also.
you should make sure the laptop has wireless, how long the battery life is, what drives it comes with, size, weight, some come with built in card readers which is cool, what type of screen(xbrite/crystalview aka non-anti glare vs traditional screens), video card, sound card, built in speakers…..
Thanks for the help guys. I ended up going with the dell 700m with a 2ghz processer, 80 gig hd, 1 gig ram, and duel layer dvd burner. (got all of the extras because of a $750 off 2 grand+ coupon) It cost 1400 after shipping and tax

good choice…
700m is a good laptop, but the battery isn’t too great…
Alienwares are pretty awesome though but you might as well carry a desktop with a wireless PCI card! it weighed approx. 347 pounds for the laptop my friend owns. :o
I need a laptop to post my articles on GL. Anyone selling? Will be putting an ad in classifieds for requests :D
Looking for cheap ($400) laptop good for internet with wireless prefer b/g and that is in good condition… no trash accepted!
