no idea if its actually downloading or not.  since windows told me about it, and I didn’t actually run windows update to grab it.  my guess is that its not actually downloading it.

my usual download speed is between 90k and 150k or so per second.  depending on the website anyway.

i dont really have too much of a reason to dl it, i already run a firewall (well technically 2, software[zap] and routers hardware firewall), i use opera for 98% of my browsing (stupid win updates and…FIP!!), i have my virus software, and i apply all necessary patches (i refuse to install the one that changes the swastika in that font to something else)

well I had my machine do windows update and it showed I needed to download and install service pack 2.  However whats really weird about it is the fact that both are win xp pro, with the same patches, but one machine needed to download a 109mb version, the other a 112mb version.  The biggest pain now is it gives me a warning every time I boot saying it doesn’t know the status of norton antivirus, and I have the firewall turned off.  Is there any way to disable the “windows security alerts” so that I don’t even see it in the taskbar?

turns out that NYU just recently implemented a new security measure where it scans your computer to make sure you have certain things (firewall, anti virus, admin password.. etc).. one of those things also happens to be SP2.. i got it a few days before I left.  Mine wasn’t working because i have windows firewall turned off.. so i thought it was my antivirus.. i have norton antivirus 2004.. and they told me to uninstall that and put in their crappy version of norton (which i believe is made for school networks).. i’m going to try and see if it works with my norton 2004 because it’s 10 times better than this.

just go to microsoft.com and click on SP2 and it will give u the option of ordering a CD for $0.00 😛

My problem I donno if it’s SP2 or not that i have is that I can’t set my internet security lower than medium.. says “please select medium or higher”  which is really stupid.. other than that.. I don’t like having 1 more thing on the bottom right hand of my screen to look at.. stupid Big shield with a X through it because i turned off my firewall..

I ordered the CD as a just in case.

I installed it from the Windows Update, and it’s pretty good. I heard that some people disabled the Firewall, but so far, it’s not giving me much problems.
The only thing that I don’t like is the popup blocker integrated into IE. I have popup blockers on my browser that I can easily control by the click of a button, but this one, you have to go to Tools -> Internet Options before being able to change it. Really annoying, if you want to allow it, although it gives you the options of allowing them from particular sites and temporarily allowing it. I don’t like the the bar that pops up, because it shifts everything down, and especially when I’m using a lot of RAM and my computer’s slow, it makes it even worse.

But besides the popup blocker, I’m finding it quite good.
SP2 is just basically a full update, rather than a service pack. Some programs have a few minor problems with them though, like Windows Theme managers like StyleXP and such.

@ antman22: I don’t use IE, I use Opera. But still, sometimes some sites don’t work on Opera (like GMail, and no, I’m not going to install FireFox cuz I hate it), and some sites just work on IE. Some programs automatically open IE, when you click a link (ie, some instant messaging programs).

the best and easiest (and free) way to stop pop up blocking is the google toolbar for IE.  no need to stop using IE just to avoid pop ups, there are several free and small programs that can do it for you (if you dont like the new pop up blocker in SP2)

SP2 works fine. That is, for things not on their destroy list.

There have been reports of it hosing machines—I have all my web stuff on my laptop, therefore, was a little apprehensive about installing—I’ve got a backup, but it’s not error proof.

Check the firewall, you may just need to open a port.
