While achievements can be addictive, I have never really been worried about them.  To me they are a secondary thing, that can come after I have completed a game, and I still want something to do.

Well look at my achievement total. Do you think I care? Of course I haven’t played much in the last month, and my funds are hurting, so no new games. :( I think its cool to have, and can help make the games last a little longer. Helps to motivate me to play more in a game when time is available.

It helps me stay in a game, and just to try see if there is anything more to a game.
Crackdown would be the best example of this,
I think I would stopped playing much earlier if there were no achievements.

That being said, when looking at my friends list, Reaper included, it feels somewhat pathetic to have such a small figure {2100}.

Yep I agree with Crackdown 100%. Achievements are “Nerd Cred” as Cliffy B said. They give the game more goals beyond whats on the disk. They add much needed replay to games, and they’re the ultimate bragging rights when comparing to your friends online.

I also think they’re alot of fun to..umm achieve. Not necessarily the Gamerscore part, I could have mine drop down to 0 and wouldnt care, but just having that achievement you can use as proof when you accomplish that hard task in a game. I beat COD2 on Veteran ” Heres my trophy for proof!”
There also a great way to see how hardcore ( and how much free time :red: ) a person is.

I agree with Goon; I like having the achievements to show what I’ve accomplished (like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, 200.6% map exploration). The Gamerscore isn’t really a necessity, though.

Taking a look at my sig,  you can probably see that I play way too much, anyway, though….. 😛

I’m playing games longer because of achievements, attempting goals that I would have never tried otherwise.

Some achievements ruin certain games and IMO ruin the experience as it results in people cheating just to meet the criteria for it; but as a whole I would say they are a good thing.  It gives me a measure to say I’ve beaten a game 100% as the game developers intended which I think is the cool part of it.

The one big issue I have with them right now is MS is allowing an additional 250 points to be added by DLC; I think that has segregated the market even more when it comes to online gaming.  Just because I don’t have a certain map pack I should still be able to freely play with anyone I choose.  Once again the almighty buck trumps common sense.

This is a great topic; I’ve added a poll to see how everyone else feels at a glance.  Poll has been updated and available immediately

I voted no. They add more to games. For example, in Forza 1, I didn’t play much of the arcade mode (Exhibition and Time Trials), but in Forza 2, I’m one race away from finishing the Time Trials and about halfway through the Exhibition races, since they each have achievements. It pushes you to get more out of a game. I’ve actually really enjoyed the Time Trials.

Personally, I like achievements, a lot of games have modes you wouldn’t use without achievements it adds on to the game also

Well on 1 side achieves kinda add in little quests to get you t odo things you normally wouldnt. Like redo a level using a certain weapon or try a game on a harded difficulty. but on the other side once i get all the achieves i think i can get i can get bored with the game
