Grace Coddington Autobiography in the Works

Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington is to pen her fashion memoirs.

The Welsh-born fashion writer, who came to the attention of many thanks to her starring role in The September Issue alongside , is to write a book with Men’s Vogue editor-in-chief Jay Fielden.

“We’re just starting, and I think it’s going to be a really fun project. I’m hoping it’s going to be very rich in fashion history.”

The book is expected to document her early life in Wales, as well as her careers at both British and American . The flame-haired former model is currently the creative director of American Vogue, and joined the magazine on the same day as Anna Wintour in 1988.

Her profile was raised by The September Issue, which explored her relationship with both Wintour and the other stylists and designers involved with the magazine. Grace began working for Vogue after her modeling career was cut short due to a car crash that led her to require plastic surgery.

The September Issue posterWell, it seems as if Anna Wintour’s Letterman stint paid off.

Opening in six New York City screens this past weekend, The September Issue raked in $240,078. With $40,013 per screen, R.J. Cutler’s Vogue documentary nabbed the second-best per-theater average of any 2009 film and the fifth-best documentary opening in history (right behind Paul Provenza’s The Aristocrats).

With Wintour going so far as waiting in a common line to catch the film, let’s hope that it scores more when it opens in limited screens across the US on September 11.

Later this fall, audiences will finally get to the know the woman who reportedly inspired The Devil Wears Prada and told Oprah Winfrey to lose weight.

For The September Issue, director R.J. Cutler got rare behind-the-scenes access of doing what she’s famously known for. In the documentary, the Vogue editor-in-chief and her team work hard to create the magazine’s September issue, one of the fashion industry’s bibles. (The 2007 edition weighed in at over four pounds.)

September issue hits theaters on August 28.
