Items Du Jour: Japan Infiltrates Givenchy, Natalie’s Ring, and Lazy Lagerfeld

Natalie Portman's Engagement Ring-- Riccardo Tisci borrowed a little inspiration from the East for Givenchy's Spring 2011 couture collection, which was modeled by an exclusively Asian cast. Like last year (much to many celebrities' dismay, I'm sure), Tisci limited the guest list to wealthy serious buyers.

-- Don't you wish you could vote Miuccia Prada into office? Well, the designer says that a life of politics is not out of the question.

-- A touch of Playboy bunny, a dash of Pirates of the Caribbean, and a sprinkle of Katy Perry make for Rihanna's upcoming music video for her song, "S&M."

-- Oscar nominee Natalie Portman's fiancé Benjamin Millepied looked to dancer-turned-jewelry designer Jamie Wolf when it came to choosing a one-of-a-kind design for the actress. "We wanted everything about the ring to speak to things that are important to Natalie," Wolf tells InStyle.

-- Who is Karl Lagerfeld's worst critic? Himself! The famed fashion designer tells Vogue that -- despite designing for his own label, Chanel, and Fendi -- he "could do better," and that he is "never pleased" with himself. He then gets pretentious by talking about how he reads pretentious books.

Items Du Jour: Lara Stone Covers Vogue Again, Alber Elbaz Cares

Pregnant Lily Allen at Givenchy—A pregnant Lily Allen showed up at Givenchy in some chic pregnancy wear. True to Fall/Winter looks, she kept it simple and Parisian with a gray long coat, white blouse, and black pumps.

Glee star Lea Michele has become quite the fashion darling, striking a pose with Zac Posen. With her nude robe-like dress, I’d say that she has some more styling etiquette to learn.

—Alber Elbaz is probably the sweetest, most caring designer. The Lanvin creative gave his models the option of wearing comfy gladiator sandals (at the last minute!) for his Spring/Summer 2011 show.

—After scoring Vogue Paris‘s coveted 90th anniversary cover, Lara Stone is right back on Vogue—this time, it’s in her native UK mag.

—Finally taking a cue from some sensible publicists, American Apparel attempts to save the brand’s image in some new ads that feature a less-creepy Dov in the face of their financial woes. He just still couldn’t resist shooting the ads in his bed.

—Traditional and iconic American swimsuit model Marisa Miller changes things up for 944, sporting a dark bob wig and gloves—a far cry from her usual California-esque look.

Quote of the Day: Cathy Horyn Says Couture is Dying

Chanel Couture 2010

“Like perpetually dieting designers, haute couture is definitely shrinking before our eyes. Oh, don’t be fooled by the giant lion at , which, depending on how you look at these things, is either an example of Karl Lagerfeld’s brilliant stagecraft or an advertisement for a new Disney restaurant chain. Most of the remaining half-dozen or so houses that show haute couture scaled down their presentations this week: a nip here, a tuck there and a PR man explaining in a hushed tone that the designer wanted to ‘return to couture’s roots.’... Unless you have been catching up on Gossip Girl reruns, national deficits and unemployment do not correlate with a couture dress that costs as much as a Harvard education. Couture is slipping off people’s radars faster than a U.F.O. “

- Fashion journalist Cathy Horyn pens the signs of couture’s death in The New York Times.

Givenchy Not Appearing in Couture Shows

Givenchy couture is ditching traditional catwalk shows in favor of private appointments with high fashion clients and editors.

The luxury French label is aiming to make fashion even more exclusive by condensing future collections into 10 looks and presenting them in the luxurious settings of an 18th century town house on the Place Vendome in Paris. The label’s couturier Riccardo Tisci told WWD he is tired of traditional fashion shows, saying, “I want to make couture even more special than it is, and not just another catwalk show. People can really experience the couture moment - see it, touch it.”

The presentation will include a lookbook shot by renowned photographer Willy Vanderperre with appearances by David Walliams’ supermodel wife Lara Stone and Mariacarla Boscono.

Laughing off reports this is a cost cutting measure, the label revealed the presentations will actually cost 35 per cent more than a traditional catwalk show. The fashion house, however, is not ruling out smaller fashion shows in the future as Tisci revealed further collections will be unveiled at the label’s couture salons where mini catwalk shows will be held.

“It’s going to be a very good moment for creativity. For couture, it’s going to go back to being very exclusive,” Tisci added, heralding this as a new start.

Items Du Jour: Courtney Love Cleans Up, Philip Treacy Wants Brad Pitt

Courtney Love—Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld team up for the zillionth time to honor German magazine Stern Fotografie‘s 60th issue. Oh, and Claudia is on six different covers, two of which she is a different ethnicity and one of which she happens to portray a man. Those crazy Germans!

—Givenchy truly must have magical powers: Facebook trashing mother and sometimes lesbian lover to Kate Moss, Courtney Love, was seen at a MOMA event hosted by the fashion house looking like an A-list starlet!

—Wannabe-sex symbol Miley Cyrus showcased her stomach at a recent concert in Portugal over the weekend, sporting half a Cheap Trick t-shirt and entirely too many belts that served no purpose for her hot pants. Has no one pointed out to her that she looks like a trashy, bad mess?

—Cameron Diaz covers British Vogue, where she states that humans need sex and that “it’s what we’re here to do.”

—Philip Treacy has thrown his hat in the ring for Brad Pitt to portray him in the Isabella Blow biopic: “Acting isn’t my forte. If I could pick anyone I’d run with Brad Pitt but it’s wishful thinking and perhaps not very likely I know.”
