Betsey Johnson Files for Bankruptcy

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Fashion Designers, News,

Betsey JohnsonBetsey Johnson has filed for bankruptcy.

The designer - who showcased her latest collection at New York Fashion Week in February - used the Chapter 11 US Bankruptcy to file her case and although she will remain creative director of her brand, the majority of its 63 stores and 350 employees will lose their jobs.

"The decision to seek protection under Chapter 11 comes after months of rigorously pursuing alternative restructuring arrangements to address Betsey Johnson LLC's cash-flow problems. After exhausting our resources and possibilities, it became apparent that neither a restructuring arrangement with a new equity investor nor a sale of the business enterprise as a going concern outside of bankruptcy was to be forthcoming. Accordingly, our board made the determination that a Chapter 11 store-closing process will likely be the best way to maximise the value of the company's assets, for the benefit of its creditors," said the company's LLC chief financial officer, Jonathan Friedman.

Kelly Osbourne Comments on McQueen Death

Kelly Osbourne at New York Fashion WeekReality star says the fashion world will never be the same since the tragic death of Alexander McQueen.

The presenter was a close friend of the designer - who was found hanged in his London home last week after reportedly taking his own life - paid tribute to him and believes nobody will ever come close to his legacy.

“I’m devastated at the death of my friend , who, it seems, may have committed suicide at this London home last week. He was only 40 and the fashion world will never be the same without him. “There aren’t many great designers in the world, even fewer trendsetters. His fashion told a story, it meant something. He was distinctive and unique. No one will come close to replicating what he did.”

Meanwhile, Kelly took to the catwalk at New York Fashion Week on Sunday. The newly-slim star strutted herself at the show, which was inspired by saloon girls, vagabonds and gamblers. She was the first model of the evening with a bandanna mask, playfully wielding toy pistols before revealing her face.

Betsey Johnson Wants TV Diffusion Line

Betsey Johnson still wants a TV diffusion lineAs rumors continue to circulate around Betsey Johnson’s desire for a diffusion line, the playful designer speaks out on her ideal shopping platform: television.

“I want to do television, like QVC or HSN. That’s in talks. I let the talkers do the talk. I jump in at the end,” Johnson revealed, when quizzed on the hopefully-upcoming line.

If she had to pick between the two networks?

“I like QVC because I’ve done it for breast cancer, T-shirts and stuff over the years. And my dentist is a big QVC-er. And Stan Herman from the CFDA, he does QVC. And my lingerie company does QVC. It just seems more QVC-y to me, in terms of my collaborations with companies.”

While she may be pretty young at heart (and in her clothes), Johnson admits that she has a slight fear of new technologies.

Betsey Johnson Picks Her Successor

Betsey Johnson has her eyes on a September retirementAfter decades of designing and producing every girl’s perfect prom dress, fashion designer Betsey Johnson’s reign at her company will soon be coming to an end.

“I should be retired. I’m basically screwing up because I’m not retired. I’d like to go in four days a month, something like that,” Johnson told New York Magazine. “My partner [Chantal Bacon] and I, we both want to know what would it be like to get up in the morning and go, ‘What do I do today?’”

Don’t worry—they’ve already found an heir (yes, it’s a guy!) to the throne: Eric Sartori.

Sartori, who has designed for Vera Wang and Hervé Léger, will be heading the brand. “He is the one. He’s much better than I am. He just has to Betsey-fy himself,” Johnson explained. The prom queen expects to hand over the responsibilities after the Fall/Winter 2009 show.

That’s not to say that she’ll be out of the picture, though…
