Bjork on McQueen’s Death Obsession

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers,

Bjork at McQueen's memorialBjork thinks had a “connection” with death.

The 40-year-old British designer took his own life on the eve of his mother’s funeral in February and the Icelandic singer thinks his “daredevil” tendencies made him a better designer.

“I felt Lee’s raw connection with nature and birth and death was very refreshing. When I moved to London, being from Iceland, I sometimes found the self-importance in the UK’s obsession with the decay of its empire boring, to insist the whole world is dying with them. Lee had so many ideas that he overcame this dilemma with fertility, raw gusto, sense of fun and courage. He was the kind of daredevil that looks death and birth straight in the eye.”

Bjork - who dressed as an angel and performed a heartfelt rendition of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday” at the designer’s memorial service last month - also posted a moving tribute on her website: “dear lee, i can´t stop thinking how both fierce and feeble you are , it is difficult to grasp this, my condolences go out to your family and friends and all your team who must be all trying to fathom this. After her initial words upon accepting the head designer role at Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton has kept fairly quiet—until now. Burton, who was hired at McQueen before she was even a graduate at Central Saint Martin’s, talks about her mentor and boss, as well as what her plans are going forward with the label.

One thing she is not continuing are the extravagant, grandiose shows McQueen was known for: “That was very much Lee’s territory—the spectacular show… In that way, I can’t try and pretend to be Lee.”

She is, however, staying true to the designer’s affinity for the macabre and sex.

Reverend Canon Giles Fraser opened the ceremony with a tribute to the iconic designer, saying, “It was a life lived in the public gaze, but it was as vulnerable and retiring as it was glamorous. Despite the dazzle of his world, he never forgot his East End roots and how much he owed to his loved ones.” Singer Bjork and a Scottish piper playing “Braveheart” accompanied the emotional service with music.

Russell Brand Influences Katy Perry’s Style, Dislikes Shopping

Russell BrandRussell Brand and fiancee are starting to influence each other’s dress sense. The British comedian and the “California Gurls” singer have been together since last September and Russell admits they are now adapting their styles to suit the other’s tastes.

“I would like to endorse that idea. I think I’ve started to wear more colors and she’s started to go darker.  She’s started to dress less like a pantomime character and is a bit more sexy - a bit grown up.”

Although Russell - famed for his eccentric dress sense - is a fan of designers like and the late Alexander McQueen, he admits he doesn’t find shopping very fulfilling.

“My look is a collision between bondage, 70s rock ‘n’ roll and a gentleman at the Henley Regatta. I don’t go shopping much because I find it hard to commit to an object. Will I ever wear these? Then I question the value of consuming, trying to make yourself feel better just by buying a pair of shoes. I think, ‘Will I feel better after I’ve bought these shoes? Or will I just be me…in some shoes.’”

Lady Gaga Debuts First Sarah Burton for McQueen Piece

Lady Gaga in Sarah Burton's catsuit

While it may not have been much of a surprise that Alexander McQueen’s right-hand lady Sarah Burton would take over his label, what is surprising is how soon she’d start churning out pieces. Also not surprising: is the first to wear them.

The McQueen lover debuted a custom-made catsuit designed by Burton for her private performance at Duane Park last night. The club was apparently so exclusive that the only photos that have surfaced are two-toned and grainy; quite a bummer, considering the outfit already looks gorgeous from what I can tell.
