Beyond the Arc: Week 8

Description
So, yeah, this is the debut of this column.  I hope everyone likes it, as I’m filling in for Dennis Velasco and his “Fantasy Jump-Off,” because he has decided to take a leave of absence of sorts from the fantasy basketball world for bigger and better things.  Best of luck to Dennis, and a big thanks from me and anyone who has ever worked with the guy or read his stuff and used it.

The Fig Cap: Now that is a sweet ‘do.

Dropping Dimes on the Daily – November 20, 2007

Stro Show dunking

The Daily finds what’s shiny each night, brushes off the dirt to reveal any blemishes and then makes a fair assesment in regards to certain players’ fantasy values.

Look at that man on the right. He looks like a natural. He’s so tall, so athletic and oozes potential the way Gilbert Arenas oozes cockiness. He dropped 24 points in 24 minutes last night and he’s center eligible. Sounds like you should act swiftly, right? Not if you know how Swift acts. Only a sucka would pick him up. And you’re not a sucka.

The Fig Cap: “I’m 100 Percent Pure Fool’s Gold”

Peja Stojakovic - Fantasy BasketballDropping Dimes On The Daily is all about the team looking at the previous night’s performances and mentioning those that did pretty goodly and those that did pretty badly.  Goodly is a word, right?  Anyway, this will be a quick look around the league, so don’t expect a ton of text, just some daily fantasy basketball goodness!!!

The Fig Cap: Peja takes on the world.  OK, just five guys from L.A.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 6, Pick 2 - David West

David West Is Happy

The Fig Cap: “Thanks for the love DD… you’re making me so goofy right now.”  Yeah, that’s how we roll.

West is one of the more underrated players in the NBA for a few reasons: 1) He plays for the Hornets, a historically “ugh” team, although their future is looking good, 2) He plays with Chris Paul, which isn’t a bad thing at all, especially when you’re on the receiving end of a Paul pass, but it doesn’t help your recognizability factor, and 3) He plays in the Western Conference, which is full of some pretty good forwards.  However, in the fantasy game, all we care about is production, right?  Well, West will keep you happy and put up some very good numbers for your team, especially this much later in a draft.  We’re talking the ultimate underrated PF value pick.  Yeah, I said it… okay, if you get him in the mid-rounds.  If you go for West too early because I’m telling you how good he is, well, that will make him overrated, right?

Round 6, Pick 2: David West, PF, New Orleans Hornets

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 5, Pick 11 - Lamar Odom

Lamar on Deng
The Fig Cap: Lamar, cuz wrestle…for the ball is what he does.

Have you seen a “don’t-er” lately? What’s a “don’t-er,” you ask? They are everywhere. They operate by telling you what not to do. Don’t draft injured guys. Don’t draft rookies. Don’t do this. Don’t do that. Behind the scenes, they are the ones always making the stinging criticisms, because it is easier being the one to cut down an idea rather than the one trying to trail blaze with an original thought. In fantasy sports you can find lots of people that tell specialize in telling people what is wrong and should not be done…and with good reason…to a point. Guessing correctly who is a bust and who is a sleeper is part of the game. My beef is the reality of needing to roll the dice at some point in the draft is just as much a part of the game. Because taking 70 cents on the dollar every round by going with safe picks might guarantee a top half finish in your league, but the odds of winning it all are slim.

So let us now talk about what to do if you do end up drafting a guy like this.

Round 5, Pick 11: Lamar Odom, SF/PF, Los Angeles Lakers

2007-08 Preseason Point Guard Rankings

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, H2H, Props, Roto, Site Features, Talent,

Agent Zero

The Fig Cap: Hey, Agent Zero, why so glum?  You’re number one in our rankings!

In “real” basketball, point guard is arguably the most difficult position to play since they are basically an extension of the head coach running the actual plays on the court.  They have to know all the plays to run and have the ball in their hands the majority of the game.  In fantasy basketball, point guards are just as important as they will be your main source of assists and a significant contributor in steals, three-pointers made, and/or free-throw percentage.  Any big-time production in points, rebounds, and/or field-goal percentage are simply gravy on top of the meat.  So, coming into the 2007-08 season, which point guard is tops for the position?  I have one word for you – HIBACHI!
