Comic Book Jobs: The Congo Needs You

Michael Crichton's CongoIf you’re looking for a comic book-related job that’s a little off the beaten path, this is your lucky day.

Does your knowledge of the Democratic Republic of Congo stop at, say, Congorilla or Michael Crichton? You might want to read up a bit before considering taking a job there.

The Search For Common Ground is looking for a Country Director in The Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Country Director “manages the overall program in the DRC from a programmatic and operational perspective, as well as leading on fundraising and donor relations.”

So where’s the comic book connection here? “SFCG uses a range of tools to implement conflict transformation and peacebuilding, including radio, television, participatory theatre, mobile cinema, comic books, joint action projects, training, public forums, and arts and culture events, among others.” I wonder what those comic books are, don’t you?

The University of Washington is looking for a Community Outreach Manager who will “serve as the lead in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating health education, outreach, and training interventions for and with American Indians and Alaska Natives in an eight-state region.”

And if I’ve posted it here, there must be a comic book connection somewhere, right? Here you go: “The Community Outreach Manager will lead/manage the following interventions: cancer support leadership trainings, cancer curriculum trainings and workshops, digital storytelling trainings, Native Comic Book Project, and other interventions as needed and identified by tribal partners and funders.”

I’ve never heard of the Native Comic Book Project before, but I believe that’s what’s being talked about here in this story at the Graphic Novel Reporter.

Naturally, there are a lot of other responsibilities and experience-based requirements you have to have on your resume so your complete run of Avengers and X-Men and your knowledge of Silver Age trivia will only get you so far.

Elsewhere, a company called Hair Comics is looking for a campus rep at Utah State University. Must “love to read comic books and have the communication skills to answer this ad.” And you have to be a USU student, too.

THR & Associates in Springfield Illinois is looking for an “Antiques and Collectibles Researcher” with “advanced knowledge in one or more of the following categories…” One of those categories is Comic Books, and the job pays between 30-50K per year, which isn’t bad for someone who knows how to grade old comics and loves to smell printed matter.

Good luck, job seekers!
