Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira KnightleyBenedict Cumberbatch once "joke-punched" a journalist for bad-mouthing Keira Knightley.

The Atonement star defended his stunning co-star by lashing out after a member of the press reportedly said something rude about her at an event.

"When I saw him [Benedict] again, I said, 'Did you punch a journalist?' and he was like, 'I f***ing did.' Everybody needs a friend like that," Keira recalled.

Despite her budding friendship with Benedict, 37, one thing the pals won't be doing together is karaoke as the 29-year-old actress hates singing in front of people. "I hate karaoke. Like, I really, really hate it. I have to be so drunk I'm nearly about to fall down before I sing in front of anybody. It just terrifies me. But, also, among the people you go with, there will be somebody who secretly has an amazing voice, and you're just like, 'F*ck off,'" she explained.

Bendeict Cumberbatch's parents, Wanda Ventham and Timothy CarltonBenedict Cumberbatch finds it awkward when men fancy his mother.

The Star Trek Into Darkness star's mom Wanda Ventham has appeared in a number of British TV shows and he admitted he doesn't know how to react when he's told she is "hot."

"I've been trapped with men in elevators who say to me, 'Oh... I really used to like your mum. She's really hot.' I don't know what to say. If I say, 'No, she's not', that is really insulting to my mother, and if I say she is, it seems very wrong. She is smokin', I guess," he said.

The British actor - who also stars in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - admitted people in the United States can't quite get their head around pronouncing his name. As well as its spelling, he joked fans sometimes confuse it for a sexually transmitted disease: "Some people don't understand my name. Some people think it is an STD, but I don't think that is what my parents were thinking about when they christened me."

Benedict CumberbatchBenedict Cumberbatch is thinking of moving from Great Britain to live in America.

The 36-year-old actor - who was educated at the top private school Harrow - says he is sick of attacks on his privileged background. The Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy star, whose parents were actors, said that "all the posh-bashing that goes on" made him consider moving to the United States.

"I wasn't born into land or titles, or new money, or an oil rig," he said. But Benedict said that he had been "castigated as a moaning, rich, public-school bastard, complaining about only getting posh roles." He continued, "It's just so predictable ... so domestic, and so dumb... It makes me think I want to go to America."

The star - who is to play an Edwardian aristocrat in BBC1 period drama Parade's End, said he enjoyed becoming a pin-up after Sherlock. "It puts a bit of a spring in your step. It's nice, you swagger a little bit, it's enjoyable. I've punched well above my weight this year. And that remains very much a secret ... I find it hysterically funny ... It's a giggle. I wield it with a massive smile," he admitted.

Benedict CumberbatchBenedict Cumberbatch thinks his rising fame will make it harder to find a girlfriend.

The British actor - who will portray villain Kahn in forthcoming Star Trek 2 and previously appeared in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse - is currently single after splitting with girlfriend Anna Jones, whom he dated following the demise of his 10-year relationship with Olivia Poulet but thinks his celebrity status will only make him more awkward in social situations.

"I'm not confident in social situations, just going up to someone in a bar is and saying 'Hi' is going to be even more difficult because they won't know the real me. They will just know me as a fictional person I play on the screen," he said.

Benedict - who is best known for portraying fictional detective Sherlock Holmes in drama series Sherlock - was "terrified" when he first arrived on set for Star Trek 2 but had an amazing experience and says his castmates, including Zachary Quinto - made him feel at ease.
