Kevin Smith’s Southwest Airlines Rants Continue

Warning to companies everywhere: Don’t ever piss off popular celebrities with a Smodcast and a Twitter account.

According to director Kevin Smith (Clerks), he was asked to get off a flight from Oakland to Burbank yesterday because he was deemed too big to fit into his single seat. This Southwest Airlines ejection has since turned into a PR disaster for the low-cost airline.

Despite his insistence that he fit comfortably in his space (he says he “fit between the arm rests & was able to buckle his seat belt w/o an extender”), Smith stated through his active Twitter account that he was told that he “wasn’t going to be allowed to sit there” because he was “a safety risk.”

After his complaints hit the web, Southwest did its best to explain their side of the story on their own Twitter account and website. Here is just a portion of the statement that can be read in full here:

“Our pilots are responsible for the Safety and comfort of all Customers on the aircraft and therefore, made the determination that Mr. Smith needed more than one seat to complete his flight. Our Employees explained why the decision was made, accommodated Mr. Smith on a later flight, and issued him a $100 Southwest travel voucher for his inconvenience.”

According to Smith, the company is trying to imply that he was aware of the seat issue because he had been known to purchase two spots next to each other in the past. While Kevin doesn’t deny requesting spare seats on occasion, he claimed on his 1.5-long podcast (a.k.a. “Smodcast”) that it’s simply because he can financially afford to put some distance between himself and the next passenger—especially when he’s flying on a “cheap” airline. Unfortunately, in yesterday’s incident, the standby flight didn’t have any extra seats—something the 39-year-old said he was totally fine with.

“REGARDLESS OF HOW FREQUENTLY I’ve purchased a spare seat in the past, the real story is: I fit not only their criteria, but also the seat,” Smith added on Twitter.

So where do things stand right now? As of 2:00 PM Pacific, it appears there may have been some movement on Southwest’s behalf. “If the call I just had was legit, a Linda from @SouthwestAir just apologized & said the Pilot DID NOT single me out for Fatty-ejection. Waiting on call back now.”

It’s safe to say we’ll be hearing a lot more about this later.
